Caroline Lawrence (Roman Mysteries) supporting women's sex-based rights

I follow some authors that DD likes on Twitter and saw that Caroline Lawrence, who wrote the Roman Mystery series, confirmed that she liked a tweet about FPFW's Scottish census self-id appeal. The person who posted the tweet couldn't see the like anymore so had insinuated that CL liked but then unliked it out of fear of reprisal, but CL came back to emphatically say she did like it!

But the embarrassed face and 'thumb - slip' comment makes me think she is distancing herself from it, a bit like JKR's 'middle aged moment' comment when she first liked something GC.

I am not familiar with Caroline Lawrence's work, but it would be great if she followed JKR's path on this

Good!

NancyDrawed · 23/02/2022 19:31

Or have I read that wrong and she is saying the removal was a thumb slip, because she DID like it.

I'm a bit rubbish at getting the nuance on twitter

Perroquet · 23/02/2022 20:32

@NancyDrawed She's saying the removal was a thumb slip. She DID like it. She also liked other retweets of the same post.

Her work is nice for getting children interested in history and mystery! She loved Nancy Drew as a child herself and wrote the Roman Mysteries because the idea "What if we had Nancy Drew, but instead in Ancient Rome?" came to her. Nice coincidence with your username Smile.

All power to her elbow, then. More authors! More sunlight!

Ooh, my DC loved her Roman Mystery books (and the TV series that was made from them). Thank you to Caroline Lawrence, stay strong if they come for you.

EdithStourton · 23/02/2022 21:28

Oh good!
I was tripping over her books for years, as the DC worked their way through.

NarcissistsEyebrows · 23/02/2022 21:30

Ooh I didn't realise there was a tb series about the Roman Mysteries books. What's is it called and where can I find it?

YouSetTheTone · 23/02/2022 22:27

Oh excellent! My DS likes her series but we’re only early on - will make sure we buy the rest! God it’s joyful to discover women in publishing who aren’t afraid to champion women.

GrinitchSpinach · 24/02/2022 00:03

Target age range for the books, please? My DDs love historical fiction and mystery, and I am motivated to support any author who supports women and girls!

8-12 or 13, I’d say.

I don't think Caroline Lawrence will be as vocal as JKR about women's rights though. Perhaps a bit of passive support here and there like this tweet. I wonder if she'd be encouraged to speak up if more people, especially parents of young girls, were to write to her about women's issues. Her main character is, after all, the Nancy Drew of ancient Rome -- a strong, independent female!

We got the box set from Amazon. Just put Roman Mysteries DVD into the search. A used set of the complete series is currently under £10.

Ooh I wonder if I can get ds to read them before discovering the tv series.

Thanks to horrible histories nothing in an actual book particularly compares.
