Apologies if there is already a thread on this, I couldn't see one.

I'm particularly inarticulate with rage this morning and this has tipped me over the fucking edge.....

We all know ant and dec ride the latest trend in a desperate attempt to stay relevant. Ru Paul is pretty popular so I'm not surprised they would try and grab headlines like this.

There's another thread here.

Why do we never see these men wear regular clothing. If you wanna teach kids it's OK to be gender non conforming, not sure how straight white men In drag can he seen as diverse though , then wear regular clothing. Jeans vests hoodies etc .

That's what kids need normalised. Not misogynistic porn addled views of women.

Movingonup22 · 22/02/2022 11:41

Brilliant for all the lesbians.

Oh. Hang on.

WomenFromVenusDoNotHaveAPenis · 22/02/2022 14:16

Oh thank you @Whatwouldscullydo I dismissed that, probably distracted by trifle DD.

It's so wrong. WTF can't men just wear a skirt or eyeliner or whatever the fuck they feel they want to wear, without having to do a full parody of sexualised fetishisation of female stereotypes. The irony is that GC feminists are the women against stereotypes who would back a man wearing eyeliner not thinking of Robert Smith here at all Wink Drag however is reinforcing sexual stereotyping, taking that ball and fucking running with it into the distance.

TheCurrywurstPrion · 22/02/2022 14:19

Did someone mention Robert Smith?

Mm, mm, mm!

LilithOfEden · 22/02/2022 15:00

I do wonder if the current generation has any real awareness of what heterosexual, manly men were wearing in the 70s and 80s. They behave as if it's avant guard for a boy/man to wear stereotypical feminine attire and declare themselves to be either female or NB. Whereas it's anything but avant guard to wear that stuff when you also say that to do so must also place you somewhere on the "female" spectrum. As opposed to the aforementioned Robert Smith et al, who were comfortable in their masculinity and sexuality whist wearing frills, eyeliner and all manner of long hair dos. What do the NB wokesters think was going on 40 + years ago? It's as if time didn't begin for them until 1990 and the toxic, hyper gendered culture that came with that decade.

WomenFromVenusDoNotHaveAPenis · 22/02/2022 15:05

I really agree. It's as though they pulled everything 100 miles backwards and then congratulated themselves for dragging it forward 100 metres.

I don't confirm to sexist stereotypes, I have a shaved head. I know that's a traditionally more "masculine" thing/look but I'm fine with it. I don't see the need to swagger around in a huge parody of manliness wearing a gigantic codpiece (what were saying about going back in time, Henry VIII and friends admired themselves for being quite the thing, with that look)

I have a lot of mixed feelings on this.

We turned SNT on as they were introducing the line up at the start of the show. DC7 saw the three drag queens and said to me that they looked like the ugly sisters in the pantomime she saw at Christmas. She has not heard or seen drag before and instantly knew that they were men and that they were wearing costumes. We didn’t talk any more about it as that was all that needed to be said. I can imagine that some parents would have had a whole conversation about how drag queens are so diverse or brave etc etc and made a big deal about this.

They mentioned that they would be performing at the end of the show so we didn’t watch that part. RuPaul was wearing a suit and no drag.

The BBC article is a bit Hmm as it is just regurgitating that same old story of saving young lives, when most kids are probably watching Drag Race on iplayer if they have access to it anyway. I think that once something becomes so popular that Ant and Dec are doing it, then it will be tomorrow’s trend pretty soon.

I was more shocked at Stacey Dooley donating her winnings on Catchphrase to Gendered Intelligence!

MoonOnASpoon · 22/02/2022 15:38

Yes and as someone on twitter said, men in drag have been all over mainstream media for many decades. As well as men not in drag wearing all manner of make-up and more feminine styles. I agree it's as if we're all supposed to have been living in gender stereotype land up until this moment and anyone who isn't LGBTQ+++ doesn't have a clue that someone could be "different" Hmm. How have they not noticed that being LGBTQ etc is seen as so incredibly positive that most teens are desperate to be it?

As an aside when I watch this, Ant really looks like a drag queen, despite not nailing the stance or walk at all - but Dec just looks exactly like Dec!

Oh no! :(

ScrollingLeaves · 22/02/2022 16:05

It is horrible to see parents seem to want this.
One mother
“In a message to Ant and Dec, she said: "What you've done tonight is just amazing. It's going to show everyone around the world it's ok to be who you want to be."

Can’t she and they see it is not going to help anybody ‘be who they want to be’. It will just lead them with a ring in their nose to be what some Queer agenda wants them to be.

It’s so completely unoriginal and unimaginative too. Years and years ago creative people were coming up with so much more in the way of individuality in how they expressed themselves. This is just junk.

MoonOnASpoon · 22/02/2022 16:14

Also I very much get the feeling And and Dec don't want to be drag queens or LGBTQ. They just want to get ratings, to raise money for food banks to be fair, but they are not showing young gay or GNC people how to be what you want to be. Just how to do saturday night style entertainment.

MoonOnASpoon · 22/02/2022 16:15

Ant sorry

Theunamedcat · 22/02/2022 16:18

My kids have no idea who ant and Dec are many other children are clueless too maybe it's a good thing

Gotofriggingsleep · 22/02/2022 16:43

I am bemused why some parents are so keen to support their children assigning themselves labels essentially around who they want to have sex with.

I met a mother this week who explained that her 11yr old daughter is gender neutral but identifies as gay and that we must use the they pronoun.

Hasselhoffsheadband · 22/02/2022 16:46

How does this help young lebsian women?

Oh yeah sorry, I forgot they don't matter a shite do they? Hmm

Whatwouldscullydo · 22/02/2022 16:48

The amount of adults so deeply invested In the sexualities of children is disturbing.

How do you give kids time amd space to figure it out when adults are quite literally now throwing a parade for them. Or taking them along to dust ones where kids really shouldn't be but fir some reason lgbt kids aren't entitled to the same levels of safguarding/protection as other kids but that makes us bigots and even straight white men appropriating lgbt are preferable Hmm

And why the hell

Whatwouldscullydo · 22/02/2022 16:49

Adults ones

Dust? Bloody auto correct

Lottapianos · 22/02/2022 16:51

'I met a mother this week who explained that her 11yr old daughter is gender neutral but identifies as gay and that we must use the they pronoun'

Well, she must be a very VERY special mummy then, eh? Please Hmm

The drag stuff is all extremely tiresome. I love Ant and Dec but yes this is just bandwagon jumping

Bitofachinwag · 22/02/2022 16:58

I don't understand how wearing all that makeup, wigs and those clothes is someone"being themselves". Surely it's the other way round?

Lowhum · 22/02/2022 17:18

Did anyone pick up on the part of the article that discussed how A&D were going to do it live with a quick change, but it was then decided that a stint in make up for two hours was more respectful?

You know what I think would be more effective for 8 year olds? Bringing in loads of funky materials and letting the kids go wild with them. Designing their own clothes and choosing which colours and textures they like the best. Get the teachers in on it too! No judgement, just complete creativity.

Tabitha005 · 22/02/2022 17:32

I'm shocked this pair of absolute dullards have done anything so 'shocking'.

Perpetuating highly-misogynistic images of femaleness is just about their level of intelligence when told to do something by their paymasters. I'd have a smidge of respect for them if they were made over to look in any way like normal women, then went out into the world and spent a few days finding out how differently women get treated to men.

But no, sensationalist bullshit like this is what, apparently, Ant & Dec's viewers will respond to best. Which is why I don't pay for a TV licence any longer.
