Interesting that many of the replies are agreeing that this ad was a bad move.

Some interesting tweets too calling out the way these predominantly white establishment organisations are using black people as the face of this. It reminds me of that GC breakdown of the 'progress' flag.

FlibbertyGiblets · 20/02/2022 15:53

yy forced teaming right there. It is appalling.
Polanski is not targeted to be seperated from his films. Yet JKR is targeted to be seperated from her creations. In plain sight.

Leaves a bad taste Sad

Datun · 20/02/2022 18:18

Despite the probability that it's legal, I'd still like her to sue. The publicity would be mammoth.

And yes, its could be argued as discriminatory since they haven't don't that to the numerous men who have actually done something wrong.

The hypocrisy is rank.

ScrollingLeaves · 20/02/2022 19:20

It is in such appalling taste surely it will back fire on the NYT.

ScrollingLeaves · 20/02/2022 19:40

From the Daily Mail I see:

“The message, laid over a woman's face, was followed by the captions 'Liana is a harmony of flavors,' and 'Independent journalism for an independent life.'”

Wasn’t a teacher’s popular book about her experiences recently heavily criticised - followed by apologies from her and changes to her book made - for describing a black pupil’s colouring in terms of a nice food?

J K Rowling aside, using the image of Liana for the NYT’s manipulation seems wrong, as though they are using Liana as bait.

Yup
Redshoeblueshoe · 20/02/2022 20:26

If I was JKR I would offer one million pounds to anyone who can show she said anything transphobic.
We all know she wouldn't have to cough up

Kendodd · 20/02/2022 20:40

Was it just one ad?
Imagine Harry Potter without its creator?
The start of the thread said four frames. I couldn't stroll down further.

MoltenLasagne · 20/02/2022 20:46

Without JK Rowling there would be no Harry Potter so in their ideal world, these crazy "Potterheads" would have to fixate on something else.

ScrollingLeaves · 20/02/2022 21:31

Some Twitter responses to the NYT subway ad.
“I don't take it kindly that @nytimes used a (black) woman as their face of idiocy in their false narrative against JK Rowling. Not taking it kindly at all. Harry Potter is JK Rowling's work. There will be no 're-imagining', Liana. “

“It’s a beautiful day. I hope everyone dresses however they want and loves whoever they want. also, JK Rowling wrote Harry Potter."

“There is a concerted effort to make women & girls terrified to speak up for ourselves & our rights. But reality is reality. No one can actually physically change their biological sex & @jk_rowling created Harry Potter. You can imagine it different all you want, but it isn’t."

It is good people are answering as though to say JK Rowling wrote Harry Potter so get over it.

I didn’t even get that “Lianna is a harmony of flavours” was referring to her race or ethnicity. I just figured it was another nonsensical phrase like the initial one about Harry Potter having no creator!

It looks like somebody who knows Liliana commented:

'Victoria Adams @ToriinDC

Replying to @holland_tom
I know them - I spent one year trying to get them to work and all they wanted to do was do training on gender issues'

RoyalCorgi · 21/02/2022 11:33

It's a good thread, but I really don't think there are any legal implications to the ad, particularly not in the US where the bar for proving libel is very high. It's nasty and it's bullying - not to mention massively stupid - but it doesn't break any laws.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/02/2022 12:30

It may not break any laws, but it's not been good PR for the NYT. A fair number of people were cancelling subs over this.

I've never been to the US and can claim no great insights into US politics and society, but it does worry me that their left-leaning (in US terms, i.e. centrist at best in European terms) liberal media are proving so lamentably lacking in rigour and critical thinking skills on a range of issues at the moment. I fear that there must be a risk that US voters will feel unable to vote for a party whose policies are so out of touch with reality and common sense. As they have a two party system, that gives them a choice between not voting at all or voting for Trump. Shock

Am I being alarmist? Is the US in as big a mess as I fear? They seem very divided. Biden isn't coming across as a strong President and leader.

ScrollingLeaves · 22/02/2022 13:57

I think I saw on another thread that this has been written about in The Telegraph today.

There's real concern that the Democrats will get slaughtered in the midterms this November. The primaries begin next month. Biden's poll numbers are in the doldrums - 56% disapproval of everything he's done so far in a recent CNN poll. 62% disapproval on the economy, which will probably be the main issue. The Republicans only need to gain 5 seats I think to regain power in the House and Senate. The out of office party usually makes gains anyway (bit like by-elections here always seem to punish the incumbent governing party). Fox News has been giving heavy coverage to the critical theory race/gender stuff and its effect on the ground in schools and sport. The Virginia Governor win for Glen Youngkin's campaign was fuelled by a lot of focus of what's being fed to children in schools by liberal teaching staff, and promising parents a return of control over what their children are taught. Then there's the covid car crash....I fear the pendulum's just going to swing right back to the right, Trump or no Trump. Anyone wanting some sensible, centre/centre left governance focusing on real issues for the working class is fucked, just as they are in this country.

If you’re a Wordle fan, try wordleunlimited instead. Means you’re not giving the misogynists at the NYT the traffic.
