I am related to a female swimmer, who represents one of the other Ivy League schools, and is impacted by this. She would love nothing more than to speak her mind, and to make a stand, but she fears losing her scholarship if she does.
Colleges (universities) only offer guaranteed full, four year scholarships in six sports; FBS (Div-I) football, tennis, men's basketball, women's basketball, women's gymnastics, and women's volleyball. College athletes outside of those sports, who do get scholarships, usually only receive partial scholarships (of varying degrees), and they are usually on a year-by-year contract basis. You have to meet certain requirements to have your scholarship renewed each year.
For many of these young women, their scholarship - even if only partial - makes a big dent in the cost of attending an Ivy League school, and is what makes it affordable. Therefore I cannot blame them for not wanting to speak out, because unless they're seniors about to graduate, they know they risk their scholarships.
It's a disgusting position to put these young women in, because athletic administrators know, they will be reluctant to speak out.
