www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/feb/15/what-i-should-have-done-when-my-12-year-old-told-me-he-was-transgender

"Five years later, Connor is in his final year of high school, and is the happiest I’ve seen him since he was a child. We were lucky enough to access a gender clinic in our city, where both he and I were both nurtured through the process of his transition. He has been getting testosterone shots for more than a year now, and recently had top surgery, which removes the breasts, leaving a masculine chest."

A double mastectomy on a 17 year old. Poor kid.

FunnyTalks · 18/02/2022 07:32

Poor kid indeed.

This kind of coverage is great for waking people up though. Better than stuff written by feminists in a way because the well meaning Guardian reader will go into it without prejudice.

This was in the Guardian a while ago and is such a great example of how it is the adults' issues - homophobia, sexism, divorce - being fixed through the medicalisation of their children. Anyone who can read this and not see the problems with this approach is beyond help really.

So worrying. Also note “the breasts” not his/her breasts.. the dissociation of the child’s own body also by their parents.

That kind of language also affirms whether intentional or not, but in this case sounds like a result of the ‘nurturing’. Doesn’t help with objectivity or desisting. Shows how adults have to adopt or collude with the dysphoria/ dissociation in order to approve of extreme treatment.

IvyTwines · 18/02/2022 09:34

The Guardian itself subscribes to that dissociation: look at the title of their recent series 'Living in a Woman's Body', as though we aren't beings, 'Our Bodies Ourselves', but merely a meat suit being controlled by a brain, like a videogamer's avatar.

Why can't men have breasts, again? I thought it was transphobic to have that point of view?

Whatinthelord · 18/02/2022 13:17

I can’t believe it’s legal to do too surgery and give T to children.

DomesticatedZombie · 18/02/2022 13:29

At the age of 17, he’s actually one of the most resilient people I know.

At the age of 17, this child's life has barely started. Just thinking of some of the decisions I made at that age ... thankfully most of them were reversible.

You know when women complain about men mansplaining about issues women have?

I think we’re not supposed to point out the flaws in logic.
