Using boobs to sell things.... now there's an idea that could really take off!

Appledrop · 10/02/2022 13:46

Here's the link to their twitter page. The men are enjoying it....typically.

I mean, of all the things boobs have been used to sell, bras seems the one thing that is actually defensible. I don't really see a problem with this, it is relevant and not especially sexualised (unless you assume boobs must always be sexualised), it celebrates different body types, and its target audience is women. Or are we supposed to be squeamish about our own bodies in the name of feminism now? Or pretend that bras aren't for people's breasts?

It would have been nice to have seen the bra's on the women considering they mention 43 styles of sports bra. I wouldn't mind this so much so long as they did the same for men and their penises, as they too come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.

UnconditionalSurrender · 10/02/2022 13:58

It just showing breasts though, not the product and a lot of the mens' comments on their Twitter post are vile. As expected. If it was all those women in their 43 styles of bra that would be useful to the bra buying population who know what their own tits look like.

Tits for hits.

Adidas comment to someone "Breasts are a natural part of the anatomy. It's time to remove this stigma to allow future generations to flourish". Hmm

Women must never ever be angry about the ridiculous pandering to men that goes on in our society. If we're feminists we must be "wonderful inspiring" and very very kind, musn't we, or we're doing it wrong. Women being held up to moral standards not expected of men is one of the oldest misogynist tropes in the book. Biscuit

Whatwouldscullydo · 10/02/2022 14:21

I assume we will see similar for the range of jock straps coming out?

It's the way people are just headless body parts. Couldn't be more objectifying if it tried.

Same thing showing the bras in situ, to demonstrate the wide range, much less objectionable. With the women's faces? Totally cool.

This is horrid.

myowndevices · 10/02/2022 14:51

Totally agree Motorina. Once we start dehumanizing women (and chopping them up visually in to body parts is he oldest way to do this) it opens the door to abuse.

Eh? Have you seen the advert?

The images are of breasts, not bras. It's not really a squeamishness thing. It's just ... some pictures of boobs, minus the product the advert is intended to sell. What is the message here? Wear our bras and your breasts will be unsupported, just like these unsupported breasts right here?

Years ago there was an advert for a range of sports bras which came with a 3D animated model of bouncing boobs, IIRC with and without bra support. There was a slider so you could change the cup size of the bouncing boobs Hmm. This looks as if it came from the same advertising department.

Waiting for the penis and anus pictures when they want to flog underpinnings for men.

Last time I looked they are are natural parts of the anatomy. You know, to remove stigma and that…

Although they probably would just stick bare breasted women in their jockstraps and boxers.

FOJN · 10/02/2022 16:01

This.

Tiphaine · 10/02/2022 19:39

The difference in the way men and women are presented in marketing and media is stark. The dehumanising misogynist objectification seen in this adidas advert is of a piece with what's been normalised. Part of the normalisation process has been to persuade people that images like this are somehow empowering to women. They're not.
