Bristol University - sex of employees in reports to HMRC?

Had a quick look at Bristol online. The Trans stuff is led by their Chief Operating Officer. Interested to see that the university says it has to report to HMRC with information that includes the sex of employees - sex as opposed to gender. It invites trans employees to inform the university that they want to change sex in the formal records - and the university then uses the new sex when reporting to HMRC. The university specifically says, in this context, that it will NEVER ask an employee for a Gender Recognition Certificate. Is this even legal?

They are going to lose all credibility.

It's remarkable.

What on Earth!?!?!

That's one of those 'ahead of the law' nonsenses that fucks up all the ONS data!

And no, it cannot be legal... like the census HMRC data has a hgher purpose than being kind. The data it collects has purpose and meaning, and sex aggragation is important for so very many issues that it cannot be buggered around with with impunity!

I hope the HMRC do better than last year's withholding of data requested in a FOI for reasons of privacy etc

The HMRC ask individuals to declare a "sex change", with a GRC, though I've read the brief info page on that and it's somewhat confusing, and uses the term gender, not sex. I imagine they're getting lots of inaccurate data through from employers, and who knows how many people they're efficient enough to catch out. Sex makes a difference to national insurance and pension.

Does sex make a difference to NI contributions and pensions, @Swear? We have the same state pension age for women and men (UK obviously) and I don't believe NI differs according to sex.

But that's a consequence of sex (and discrimination), not that HMRC actually treats people differently due to sex, not that pension ages have been equalised?

HMRC itself mentions that changing legal sex may affect tax and national insurance.

I am vaguely aware that a number of universities are challenging the male/female options that HMRC request as they feel it is outdated.

Someone I know who works with 16-19 year olds has said similar.

I suppose being male or female is a very old fashioned, isn't it, so old fashioned it's been around since the dawn of time.

Wow. Bristol university is really working hard on erasing women, isn't it. (I'm guessing that they've got more men than women in the top jobs -- until enough of them change their gender on official records.)

Are there any univeristies that don't have a life sciences department?

You have to wonder what the hell they are thinking, teaching...
