I thought these had all stopped, but I've just seen one advertised at my local library. massive sigh My kids are no longer that age, but I wonder if anyone has any experience of objecting to these. Is there any point in drawing attention to the massive inappropriateness of toddlers being read stories by people who normally perform very adult shows to adults? Do they ever get cancelled if people object?

Feel like I’m missing something here.

Do you think that they will launch into a tirade of filthy jokes to entertain?

Could you clarify what your actual objections are? Im not understanding at all.

You're in favour of it?

Are you a parent or guardian of children?

nocoolnamesleft · 02/02/2022 22:57

That an insulting, misogynistic, and hypersexualised parody of womanhood is being promoted to children.

EishetChayil · 02/02/2022 23:03

It's bloody everywhere. My local theatre is displaying huge posters of a drag act named "Filla Crack". How lovely to have to explain that one to my daughter as we pass by.

NaerDoWell · 02/02/2022 23:06

Following as Ive just got an email advertising Drag Queen Story time at my local library- maybe it's the same one as the OP - and have similar concerns to @nocoolnamesleft

What the difference between blackface and womanface @Diditopknot?
kagerou · 02/02/2022 23:16

No one is forcing kids to go :/

I've never been (and I'm guessing people judging haven't either) but i doubt they allow inappropriate comments. Its probably more like having a panto dame than the OTT drag queen sets at adult venues.

I've been to one - and also worked in a venue that held them.

They were telling stories about gender.

Widow Twankee doesn't tell little children that they can be born in the wrong body.

You doubt it…but you don’t know, do you?

Revolting.

I complained to a local library, pointed out the complete lack of safeguarding - both in the hiring of adult entertainers for children (even if the content is age appropriate drag queens are not for children), and the fact that the said performer had explicit photos on his public SM.

The performance was postponed but not cancelled, and the general consensus was that those who complained were:-
Homophobic
Transphobic
Trying to censor what should be a normal part of childhood
Fat old fuddy-duddy women, past their prime and jealous of the drag queen’s femininity.

Toseland · 02/02/2022 23:33

Why are we not protesting outside? Perhaps we should? Sexualised, dress, mannerisms, names, content, innuendo and kids do not go together. This is a seed that is used, I think it starts children on the path to laughing at and disrespecting women and accepting men as women. It’s also mocking women to their children right in front of them, it makes me so angry.

Lovelyricepudding · 02/02/2022 23:49

What do you count as inappropriate? Is telling small children it is OK to mock women appropriate? Is demonstrating twerking to toddlers appropriate? Is breaking down boundaries between adult sexualised entertainment and children appropriate? Are drag names appropriate?

And why do you think men might be interested in breaking down barriers between adult entertainment and children?

DoubleYouOhEmAyEn · 02/02/2022 23:52

Lovejoy fat old fussy duddys jealous of the drag queens femininity Confused It's so shocking they think like that.
FFS. Horrified at the mysoginistic parody, not jealous in any way. It makes me so cross.
Drag is just normalising a distorted and vile parody of women. Quite rightly no one can dress up in black face any more, yet this shit is celebrated. The double standard is so obvious.

Lampshading · 02/02/2022 23:54

The libraries here did one fairly recently too, they said it was to promote tolerance, but what of, drag Queens? Why do children need to be taught to be tolerant towards a particular type of 'entertainer'? Storytime with mimes next, read a book with a stand up comedian, rhyme time with a musical theatre performer. I'd love for some inspirational homosexual authors to read children's books that speak of tolerance so it isn't about that at all. But yeah I don't get it.

I had a recent conversation with a library worker acquaintance about drag queen story time recently. She brought it up and said those that objected were hateful. This seemed to be the view of management in in the library service. They think to the objections are about homophobia/transphobia I disagreed and it went down like a lead balloon.
Monitaurus · 03/02/2022 02:25

I complained to the local authority concerned and my formal complaint was examined but rejected , on the grounds of diversity being important. I asked when the next sessions by older lesbians would take place but curiously drag queens are the only people offering diversity. Many objected but it went ahead anyway .

PepInYourStep · 03/02/2022 03:09

As an aside to the main conversation,

PP said: How lovely to have to explain that one to my daughter as we pass by.

You don't have to explain everything to young children. When raising mine, I found that "that show (item, whatever) is for adults, I'll explain when you are older", and then a firm no and change of subject when entreatied to explain further, worked fine.

Barbarantia · 03/02/2022 03:19

It's lgbt history month. Library most likely put out a tender for lgbt appropriate entertainment for children and was awash with lgbT responses and thought this must be the way of the modern world and went along.
It's telling when you try to provide representation for kids but adults see it as another propaganda outlet can't disscociate representation from diversification. or even child demographics and their needs from adult demographics and their needs.

Road to hell, good intentions, yada yada.

For the poster who doesn't see the issue : The last time this batshittery surfaced, it ended with children listening to stories from a brightly coloured rainbow monkey with oversized male genitalia and butt cheeks on display. That's how far it had to go before people were confident enough to say stop.

If your gut tells you something is wrong then there's a chance something is wrong with it even if you can't articulate it.
Don't push down worries because you feel bad that you may be judging someone. Yes we give people a chance but we don't erase our worries. Don't let the thing you can't articulate get so big you can't miss it and it has already caused damage before you say stop.

N0Name · 03/02/2022 04:51

Anyone who doesn’t see anything wrong with Drag in libraries - look at the “rainbow dildo monkey” threads on here… very enlightening.

But it’s not for adults. It’s a drag Queen story time. So she will need to offer some sort of explanation.

I would never have taken DC to this.

Incidentally is drag something a lot of straight women enjoy? Genuine Q as last I went to the theatre & their next show is drag & my super woke grind pushed the flyer away and said ‘ugh so creepy I hate it’ - I was surprised. I assumed it was just me.

I heard that a recent drag programme on tv (BBC3?) is getting grief for ‘blackface’. I have to say I laughed head off. Then shook my head and rolled my eyes so hard.

When was BAME person story time? Disabled person story time? Elderly person story time? Since when are men who dress as parodies of women diverse?
KittenKong · 03/02/2022 08:33

My niece is a firefighter and set up an education ‘course’ to go into schools and colleges to speak to girls about joining the forces. She is brilliant with kids and young people (and has a tonne of cool equipment!).

People like her - great - boys and girls can see the valuable job she does and learn a lot responsibility and teamwork. She is gay, so I guess that may rock a box for older students (why the hell would a toddler give a rainbow moneys about that?)

Drag Queen - what the hell do kids learn - how to be ‘bitchy and sassy’ - how to mock women? How to made crude innuendos?

If a child looks up ‘Kitten-niece firefighter’ online they will get photos of her with her rig, uniforms, parades, training, drilling cadets, a sailing, holding puppies (always seem to be saving animals…).

Google the name of your drag time story teller and - in the cases in Scotland - you may well get some pretty filthy x rated images and stories.
