Asked directly about David lammys dinosaurs hoarding rights comments “one of the things men have always underestimated is the sense in which women have felt like they are being told to be quiet which is why In this context it is incendiary”

Maybe Labour are trying to edge back….

I’d trust more in undercooked chicken not giving me food poisoning than I would Wes Streeting and Labour.

I won’t forgive or forget.

Beamur · 30/01/2022 11:22

Very few politicians are actually creatures of integrity.
Wes at least understands the issues in hand here. Whilst you might not feel disposed towards the golden bridge, for the waters to be tested by someone as mired in gender ideology as a signatory to the 'Labour against transphobia' group is significant.
I don't really care what politicians actually think or believe, what matters is how they vote and what policies and laws that they bring in.
They probably never believed TWAW either..

Iwishihadariver · 30/01/2022 11:29

@BettyFilous

They’ve seen which way the wind is blowing and are changing tack. Wes is a career politician with ambition, so is ahead of the rest. Do I trust him? No. Do I think Labour has ‘got it’ yet? No, Do I trust them not to enact self-ID at the first sniff of power? No. Does Wes saying pretty words undo the last 5 years of Labour shitting on women raising concern about this? No. Will I be voting for my incumbent Labour MP at the next election, as I have done previously? Unlikely. They’re going to have to work a damn sight harder to women that they’ve disenfranchised over this issue and Keir needs to show leadership on it, not send out some media and party friendly pipsqueak to test the water.

All of this ⬆️ from another lapsed Labour voter

DoubleYouOhEmAyEn · 30/01/2022 11:30

Thanks WhereYouLeftIt that's really informative.

Regardless of Streeting or the Labour Party, if this is true, it can only be very good news.

Omicrone · 30/01/2022 11:45

I did quite enjoy reading that article though, whatever else, Wes is clearly an intelligent bloke who has certainly 'done good' from his beginnings. The bit where he said that he was told by certain people to leave off that he went to Cambridge from a leaflet - I can so imagine that!

Oh, and he really does look like a wartime grocer! Grin

TheMarzipanDildo · 30/01/2022 11:50

He was a right knob with the Facebook hit list thing, but I like to think he might have genuinely changed his mind...

PlanetNormal · 30/01/2022 12:38

I don’t really understand all the angst about Labour’s position on sex & gender issues. It isn’t compulsory to vote for them. If this is the most important political issue for you, and one which will will have a decisive effect on how you vote at the next election, then just vote Conservative or Reform. Those parties best reflect your gender critical views.

I’m a former Labour activist and I decided I couldn’t support the party while Corbyn was leader because as PM he would be a threat to 🇬🇧 national security. He proved me right about this by siding with Russia over the Skripal poisonings - the act of a traitor. So I voted Lib Dem at the last two elections.

We need a functioning opposition. It's not just about the ruling party.

I've voted Labour all my life. I would find it very hard to vote Conservative - look at how they've behaved since being in government. All the cronyism, giving contracts to their mates, breaking their own Covid rules. Utterly dreadful people.

But I can't vote Labour while they maintain that men can be women.

I'd like to think that too. But I'm far from convinced, and until I see proof of change, I'll stick with the proof that he's a right knob..
RoyalCorgi · 30/01/2022 14:03

Unfortunately, Rosie Duffield has tweeted today to say that another Labour Party activist has published a libellous article about her, and that she's had absolutely no support from the Labour leadership. She said she's reconsidering her position as a Labour MP. So I think that tells us just how genuine Streeting's supposed conciliatory gestures are.

Mollyollydolly · 30/01/2022 14:31

It all comes down to what makes it in the manifesto. If self ID is there, I'm out. He's very good friends with Jess Phillips so I like to think there's some robust conversations out of sight. They want to get in power, to do so they need to convince a lot of women it's in their interests. It's a start.

FOJN · 30/01/2022 14:48

Jess Phillips was part of the Women and Equalities committee which recommended self ID. She has previously stated TWAW. I think the views she expresses depend on who she is talking too.

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 30/01/2022 14:50

I wouldn’t trust Jess Phillips any further than I could throw her, sadly. And I agree that Labour MPs need to stand up for Rosie Duffield.

Mollyollydolly · 30/01/2022 14:54

I know how disappointing Jess Phillips has been, but hopefully they're not stupid and will show some pragmatism. This issue is all over the press everyday. I'm still hopeful they will come back to reality, if they don't I wont vote for them. I don't trust them either. How they'd control the mad activists is another matter. Always Labour's problem.

BettyFilous · 30/01/2022 14:55

I’m taking a dim view of the Labour party’s treatment of Rosie Duffield too. I mentioned it on the doorstep to a local Labour canvasser last May. He said I wasn’t the first to have done so and privately expressed agreement.

bellinisurge · 30/01/2022 15:22

Any ideas on what Yvette Cooper thinks? She's been my last hope in Labour for some time although her silence is deafening

Ohnohedident · 30/01/2022 15:53

Ambitious young politician. Nothing that comes out of his mouth can be trusted.
Has he even said anything in support of womens rights? seems like he is just saying they need to hide the woman hating better?

Ohnohedident · 30/01/2022 15:56

Yep, I think we need to stick with what Rosie has to say.She has proved she is a supporter of womens rights. Streeting, notso much.
ArabellaScott · 30/01/2022 15:59

Flowers Rosie. I'm sorry. Such a shit show. I don't think I can forgive Labour for the way they've hung you out to dry, here.

PronounssheRa · 30/01/2022 16:39

Streeting was part of Lily Madigan's Facebook group "Labour Against Transphobia"

Yep. Streeting is untrustworthy and only interested in his own climb up the political ladder.

FKATondelayo · 30/01/2022 16:44

This is blatantly about local elections in May. They know it is increasingly a doorstep issue so they are trying to take a conciliatory approach because they need women's votes to hand the Tories their arse. It's pure opportunism.

FKATondelayo · 30/01/2022 16:47

I don’t really understand all the angst about Labour’s position on sex & gender issues. It isn’t compulsory to vote for them.

Who else am I, a left wing woman who opposes austerity, supposed to vote for? Greens? Lib Dem? It's entirely reasonable to hold your party account for their policies. Self-ID is a red line for me but the annihilation of public services, workers rights and social safety net is not something I will ever vote for. I'm effectively disenfranchised.

Linguini · 30/01/2022 17:51

Good questions from Rachel Cooke there
