And excellent and well timed article.

And the link to the video on the website is Sinead speaking as eloquently about the pressures she felt as a woman and the ease with which she could transition as she always does.

The Snp greens are idiots to plough ahead with their ideas.

I also never understand how faux feminists with pronouns don't make the links to the forces of gender stereotypes, including misogyny and transition.

Thank you Sinead for your continued bravery in speaking out. FlowersCakeBrew

She also enjoyed the experience of being seen as a man; with a deepened voice and facial hair, she easily “passed”. “Walking past pubs with drunk guys having a smoke outside them, they didn’t even glance at me. It was a different world. There was no fear that I was going to be followed or groped or, in the worst-case scenario, raped.”

This says so much about one of the underlying causes of adolescent girls transitioning. It's just desperate that, rather than address the way women and girls are treated in society, we would rather put our children on a pathway to a lifetime of medication and surgery.

SmallOrFarAway · 29/01/2022 22:11

'As young as 12' what the hell is going on? We don't let children make decisions about voting, certain films, piercings, tattoos, finances, sex, marriage etc before 16/18 for good reason, and we know that brains continue to develop into the early 20s...yet it could be as young as 12 someone can start such an irreversible biological process? Why on earth would anybody think this a good idea? It's just beyond disturbing and unbelievable.

I'm all for children exploring their personalities and if girls want to be 'tomboys' (ffs why can't we just stop gendering and labelling toys/hair/clothing styles/activities etc anyway) that's great, and then perhaps look into this when they're truly old enough to understand what transitioning really means. But it needs to be after very serious discussion and long term therapy to first address the feelings of dysphoria and consider other reasons for unhappiness and depression before such drastic measures beyond genitalia. I don't want people living in misery and if they decide hormones and surgery is truly the answer for them once they are old enough then fine, that's their informed choice. But it doesn't sound like sinead had anything beyond a 'casual conversation', how can that be acceptable at such a young age? How is it consent and informed choice when it's a child? It's truly mind boggling. The more I read the more I feel like this is some horrific parallel universe.

I know.

Even as a 50 year old I still had a jolt of longing for that freedom when I read this. It really took me by surprise.

No bloody surprise at all that being male looks more attractive.

littlbrowndog · 29/01/2022 23:02

Oh poor sinead. So let down by doctors. Sinead. I hope you can find some peace

littlbrowndog · 29/01/2022 23:04

Yeah and children of 12 making these descions

We have think 25 in pubs. 18 for tattoos. Yet 12 for this.

Scottish government. Guilty

There is also this in today's Times about Carrie and David Grant and their trans and non-binary children:

This. The reasons for women wanting to transition are never investigated. Given how much time, money, resources, etc, being devoted to transgenderism, it's quite marked how much it's ignored.

She says We need to stop talking about ‘trans people’ and ‘trans issues’. We need to boil down what the different types of gender dysphoria are, we need to address them and we need to remember that these people are patients.”

Remove the ideology and break down 'gender dysphoria' into its component parts.

It's remarkable how it's shifted from a mental condition to a civil rights issue over 'identity'.

SapphosRock · 30/01/2022 06:16

Brave woman sharing her story. Sadly this is soon going to be commonplace.

Adatwistscientist · 30/01/2022 06:32

Yet asked to be steralised after three DC and they'll say no until your husband says he doesn't want another Hmm

David and Carrie must have spent a lot of time and money (no NHS psych makes some of those diagnoses) with private psychs over the years. The conclusion: acceptance of the child and parenting skills. What a circuitous route to the very sensible end point.

DoubleTweenQueen · 30/01/2022 09:04

It says further down the article that none of the children have taken hormones or had surgery.

DoubleTweenQueen · 30/01/2022 09:06

It seems changing how they are being referred to by name and pronouns has been the limit of their 'transition'. Thank heavens.

aweegc · 30/01/2022 09:08

@DoubleTweenQueen

It says further down the article that none of the children have taken hormones or had surgery.
..because transitioning is spiritual, just having medical treatment isn't enough, in her opinion.

She refers to her adopted son as "the child" of "this child" while referring to her daughter as a son. That poor (actual) boy.

DoubleTweenQueen · 30/01/2022 09:09

That's the Grant's children:

As the Grants point out, though, the focus on surgery and hormones can be misleading. Tylan has not had surgery or taken hormones to try to change his body, nor have any of the Grant children. “Being trans is as spiritual as it is physical,” Tylan explains. “I do not believe you get surgery and then you are trans. There are trans people who get no physical changes to their body and that does not make them any less trans. I have transitioned socially — it is always an ongoing journey, to find that sweet spot and think, ‘OK, yes.’ ”

The Grant children have talked to therapists about their feelings, Carrie says, adding: “If one of the kids wanted to medically transition I would support that.” David sounds a cautious note. “I would want to know everything about it,” he says. “You want to protect them. I would want them to properly research it, take time, count the costs and think it through.”

aweegc · 30/01/2022 09:11

In 2020 the NHS changed the wording of its guidance on puberty blockers, the effects of which it used to say were “considered to be fully reversible”. It now says: “Although [the GIDS] advises this is a physically reversible treatment if stopped, it is not known what the psychological effects may be.

How can GIDS, or anybody else, say it's physically reversible when at least in girls they're going to be left with a broken voice and increased facial hair?! While electrolysis can help with the hair, I understood there no way to "unbreak" a voice. And that's a pretty major thing.

Igneococcus · 30/01/2022 09:19

This sentence struck me weird, is a father who does housework and is involved in raising his kids really noteworthy in 2022?

"Tylan says that growing up with a gay uncle and a father who happily took on some of the more traditionally female roles around the house has influenced his freedom of thought around gender."

DoubleTweenQueen · 30/01/2022 09:28

@WarriorN Thanks for the article on Sinead - follow her on Twitter. She's amazing, using her experience to show a different side and the reality & danger of what can happen without thorough exploration of the root causes of a young person's dysphoria. I hope it helps her to know she is making a difference.
Like the link in the article to the focus on detransitioners, on March 12th, with Genspect, too
