Thanks for heads up

Yes, shame she didn't get to finish her last point, but the EHRC have written to dept of education - good. Would love to see content. Our school are down the rabbit hole :(

KittenKong · 29/01/2022 09:27

She wasn’t very good - a bit blindsided with the news that her predecessor had said that he thought her appointment was political. She didn’t really get to state examples.

AssignedBlobbyAtBirth · 29/01/2022 10:27

I thought she did well given how short a time she had. The absolute crux of the matter is that terms that law is based on are not defined. If the EHRC define terms it will open more eyes

JoodyBlue · 29/01/2022 11:38

Agree @AssignedBlobbyAtBirth

nauticant · 29/01/2022 11:44

I'm with KittenKong, the interview was as clear as mud. It wasn't helped by Nick Robinson trying to steer the discussion in a particular direction away from what she was there to talk about, the law and why the EHRC had intervened.

lovelyweathertoday · 29/01/2022 11:53

He does ask long rambling questions. I did like her answer about her predecessor being appointed using the same procedure.

JoodyBlue · 29/01/2022 12:03

She mentions that what has changed since the previous responses, are significant concerns raised about rights conflicts. Very grown up and an issue with which noone can really argue. The only way to dismiss these concerns is to say those concerns are invalid or these things should not be said a la Sturgeon et Starmer. I think she is holding up well.

LizzieSiddal · 29/01/2022 12:07

I think most people wouldn’t have had a clue what was being discussed, that’s why Nick was asking for specific examples like “changing rooms” but it isn’t a subject which can be simplified, (well it is but you’d probably get a visit from the police).

Iknowitisheresomewhere · 29/01/2022 14:42

Another one who thinks this wasn't very clear, unfortunately. They seemed to get bogged down in the politics of her appointment for too long.

serendipitea · 29/01/2022 17:01

I feel she was ambushed at the second time her appointment was questioned - and from what I've read it is women who are often questioned about their promotions, not men.

In a way I am glad she didn't just list the main current topics - shelters, sports, changing rooms - but tried to talk about more fundamental questions such as definitions in law. I liked her measured tone. Unfortunately cut short - I would have liked to hear what her final punch line was going to be.

Do interviewees get to know exactly how long the interview will be so they can set up a timer? It's so often that people are cutoff - often to give time for some inane continuity ad, which is very frustrating.

butnobodytoldme · 29/01/2022 19:50

Both were political appointments, with a great difference that her predecessor was a senior member of current SWall.
This new woman is not, and has made a start on enforcement of equality law, which is and has always been the job of EHRC.

She has written to Nicola, pointing out that sex based rights are legally protected. (71% of Scots agree, but Nicola appears determined to stay captured).
(Meanwhile, children of 13 can apparently easily access what doctors believe are dangerous medications to 'transition', albeit not via NHS, Would there be as little fuss, if black 13 year old children were obtaining 'treatment' to 'become white'? The analogy appears close,)
