Has this been a thing for a while and I missed it? What does it even mean?

My apologies, there were a few more words in there before I hit post. My phone seems to have eaten them!

Self identify as in the old fashioned self refer

Again, apologies. I'd blame the dog, but he is asleep elsewhere Smile

HollowTalk · 25/01/2022 16:20

This is just a joke, surely?

Mamette · 25/01/2022 16:23

I think it just means they will take your word that your are pregnant and you won’t need proof of pg to get the booster.

Kendodd · 25/01/2022 16:31

Love to know the exact wording and meaning they used in the other languages?

Omicrone · 25/01/2022 16:56

The use of 'self-identify' here is just weird, especially when used in conjunction with 'pregnant people'.

A few years ago it I guess it would have meant something different, but 'self-identify' now basically means to see yourself as something you are objectively not, and pregnancy just doesn't work in that way.

FOJN · 25/01/2022 17:25

I've just used Google translate on the French version, it says:

Dial 1 833 838-2323 and identify yourself as pregnant.

this makes much more sense so why is the English version written so badly.

@SpudleyLass

This bothered me too. You're either pregnant or you're not. You can't ''self identify'' as pregnant - if you are, you are.
And if you are, you can phone them up and tell them and they will believe you and won't demand to see a doctor's note or a force you to take a pregnancy test to prove it. That's literally all this means.
Goatsaregreat · 25/01/2022 20:54
Grin That's not how it works Blueberry. If you haven't taken a test and know that you're pregnant, confirming it is the first thing that will happen. Women don't (and wouldn't be allowed) to just think they may be pregnant or feel that they're pregnant and receive medical treatment without confirmation. Pregnant women receive a range of often invasive and intensive medical care - but it all follows confirmation that a woman is pregnant. Wishing and self identifying doesn't come into it.

Unbelievable the arrogance of appropriating pregnancy like this and trying to lecture women from such a position of ignorance.

It says “identify yourself as being pregnant” but yes, it’s clearer.

British Columbia ffs, for once I don't envy Canadians.

In the UK it's self referral. Looking forward to seeing if the language has changed at my hospital / midwife team, going to have some fun if I'm referred to as a pregnant person, bring it ON.

malanimo · 25/01/2022 21:33

They don't even need to use 'pregnant people' at all. Even if they don't want to say 'women', the message could be something simple like: "If you're pregnant, you can now get your booster shot 8 weeks after your second dose. If you haven't received an invitation yet, call to register"

QueenPeony · 25/01/2022 21:37

That's how it's worked until now, but since health (and other) services are being required to believe and act as if TW literally are women, this is a bit of a worry. There are TW who simulate pregnancies and would be extremely invested in being treated as pregnant by officialdom. If it's essential to accept males as women, it's not a very big leap to accept males who self-identify as pregnant, as pregnant. Nothing would surprise me at this point.

NitroNine · 25/01/2022 21:39

The whole female experience of medical care once puberty hits is that of existing as a [potentially] pregnant individual up until you are [assumed] post-menopausal.

It doesn’t matter why you’re in A&E, you’re getting a pregnancy test. Any kind of imaging? It’s not enough to give the date of your last period & sign to say you’re not pregnant; you have to tell them exactly how you know you’re not pregnant. Medication that might harm a foetus you have no intention of ever conceiving? Completely off the table until there’s no potential risk you’ll get pregnant. Going by your age, rather than the actual probability of you conceiving [& carrying a pregnancy to term], obviously.

If you say “I’m pregnant” or “I think I’m pregnant” to paramedics/EMTs they will treat you accordingly - & then as soon as you get to hospital they will do a blood &/or urine test to confirm. That’s about as far as pregnancy self-ID goes in terms of obtaining healthcare, because everywhere else would get confirmation of pregnancy before providing care.

Self-ID as a pregnant person: a whole new flavour of medical misogyny.

Your mistake is assuming "self identify" means "identify as something you're not". It does not. It simply means, as I already explained, that if you tell them you're pregnant, they will give you a booster. This isn't invasive or intensive medical care so I'm not sure why you went off on a tangent about that. No one is "appropriating" anything, and the only ignorance here is yours.

Pregnant people Angry

borntobequiet · 25/01/2022 22:07

Your mistake is assuming "self identify" means "identify as something you're not".

As to self-identify as something or other increasingly means to say one is something that one is not, it’s hardly a mistake.

FOJN · 25/01/2022 22:10

Your mistake is assuming "self identify" means "identify as something you're not"

To be fair it's an easy mistake to make there's a lot of self identifying as something you're not about.

Regularsizedrudy · 25/01/2022 22:14

@Regularsizedrudy

I think it just means your don’t have to provide proof you are pregnant. Which is good as some women won’t have this until further into their pregnancy.
As above
Socialcarenope · 25/01/2022 22:18

I think it's accurate.

In 3 pregnancies, I've only had pregnancy confirmed at scans. I've self identified as pregnant, no confirmation or proof needed.

JackieWeaversZoomAc · 25/01/2022 22:18

It's Tranada - where women are no longer acceptable.

Kendodd · 25/01/2022 22:41

Well I wonder what would happen if a trans woman did identify themselves as pregnant? In the case of a booster vaccine it doesn't really matter but it they just booked themselves in for a midwife appointment, what then? Midwife tells them they're not pregnant, they say they are pregnant. And I'm talking about them genuinely believing this and wanting pregnancy monitoring. I'm not sure it's very different from someone with a Male body and penis saying they're a woman.

BeyondShrinks · 25/01/2022 22:48

The irony being, that if you are female you will still struggle to self-identify as not pregnant for surgery and x-rays...

QueenPeony · 25/01/2022 23:09

As to self-identify as something or other increasingly means to say one is something that one is not, it’s hardly a mistake.

And when it comes to being a woman, when people identify as one when they are not, you have to believe them, but if you think you are one because you are, you're a bigot.

DdraigGoch · 25/01/2022 23:37

I miss when Twitter had a 140 character limit. It discouraged this sort of verbal diarrhea.

"Pregnant women can now get their booster 8 weeks after their second dose. Call 1-833-838-2323 to book. 18+ only
gov.bc.ca/booster

135 characters; brief and to the point.
