Could anyone tell me is Val McDermid gender critical? I see she is speaking at the lesbian lives conference in Cork where the keynote speaker is a transwoman www.ucc.ie/en/lesbianlives2022/

OP posts:

@KimikosNightmare.
Her wealth might not be affected if she supported a GC position but her comfort would significantly be affected.

LaChanticleer · 23/01/2022 16:41

Friend of mine who’s an academic in the US told me that the American transwoman keynote speaker at that conference about lesbian lives (hollow laughter) charges around 1000 US dollars to give these speeches, plus Business class travel expenses. On top of a pretty high academic salary.

ScreamingMeMe · 23/01/2022 16:49

I've read The Mermaids Singing and one I can't remember the title of, about a tv personality that kidnapped, tortured and murdered girls. Both horrifically violent. That was enough for me! I don't think I've read anything comparable to them since.

I don't think there is the slightest possibility McDermid supports a radical feminist gender critical view.

She doesn't have to of course. I personally couldn't care less what Val McDermid thinks about anything.

I'm just slightly puzzled at posts like yours which seem to suggest she would if she could but it would be so difficult. Many women who have nothing remotely resembling the wealth, privilege, influence, friends in high places have stated their case.

@signalbox yep think that clip is it

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 23/01/2022 17:30

@Theeyeballsinthesky

As far as I’m aware she’s full on TWAW (signed this twitter.com/valmcdermid/status/1311308245554933760?s=21) like a depressingly large number of successful older lesbians in long term settled relationships (see also Nancy Kelly, baronesses barker & hunt) she seems completely unbothered by the impact of TWAW on younger lesbians.
That was my impression and that she is strongly minded that TWAW.
RepentMotherfucker · 23/01/2022 18:34

@Viviennemary

She is a sensible modest person not like some who love to shout their mouth off no matter whom they offend and what damage they do.
There you go. Talking about yourself again Grin
MilkGoatee · 23/01/2022 18:39

The interesting thing is that the killer in The Mermaid's Singing may be a transwoman but was refused one or more times to have GRS by the medical establishment. Which is what caused the issues coming to light in the book.

Based on that book alone, I cannot understand that she's not been terf-ified by the TRA community. But maybe the book is so old by now they don't read (about) it. I think I read it mid 90s, and it'd been out a few years already by then.

ScreamingMeMe · 23/01/2022 18:46

So the keynote speaker isn't just any old transwoman...

"One of the keynote speakers at a lesbian conference at the University of Cork is a male who identifies as a lesbian and has a history of campaigning against rape relief centres"

"S. Stryker, editor of Trans Studies Quarterly, discusses porn with a "precocious teenage lesbian", and dedicates the rest of his op-ed to drumming up more customers for PornHub.

"“Hey, what's that bulge you got there?"

There are recent reviews on Good Reads- within last 6 months to last 4 years.

The fact the killer is transgender is barely mentioned. Where there is criticism it's mainly of the gratuitous torture porn or the leaden prose. Here's a couple of examples.

Reading his acts by the light of such mute traces as he left behind him, the police became aware that latterly he must have loitered. And the reason which governed him is striking; because at once it records—that murder was not pursued by him simply as a means to an end, but also as an end for itself

I know exactly the type you mean!
I wonder if they have it on their CV??? Wink

Abhannmor · 23/01/2022 19:21

But McDermids transgender psycho killer is really a victim driven to murder by the cruel uncaring NHS. So maybe she is a TRA heroine still. Personally I prefer a spine tingling ghost story to her buckets of gore and torture porn.

LaChanticleer · 23/01/2022 20:13

they don't read (about) it

I doubt they read anything though, to be fair @MilkGoatee

ArabellaScott · 23/01/2022 22:20

Another one here who can't read McDermid; too violent.

Yeah her writing is on a par with the atrocity that is E L James...

Both of them are dog crap tier writers, but prosy bullshit is easily marketed I guess.

They are like the Justin Beibers and Brittany Spears of novels I think.

Just hacks, no value, and poorly executed in every way.

ha ha I came on to say similar, but this says it much better than I could. tedious professional Scotsperson indeed!

tedious professional Scotsperson

You could probably do a line of T-shirts and badges, Kimiko. Smile

TheHoptimist · 24/01/2022 20:22

She is boring and not engaging as a speaker- - heard her at a crime festival and left part way through

I don't mind violent, but I found that profiler character super annoyingly naval gazing.
Rhannion · 28/01/2022 03:24
I doubt it.

I can't stand Val McDermid. It's nothing to with whether or not she's "gender critical". She writes extremely violent books, is a crony of Sturgeon's and is one of the tedious group of professional Scotspersons.

She is apparently a friend of J K Rowling's but apart from the tweet above (which isn't actually supportive) I can't find anything from McDermid supporting JKR. There's plenty from 2016 of JKR coming out in support of McDermid.

I haven't read The Mermaids Singing- very interesting plot.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mermaids_Singing
I pointed this out ages ago. Val McDermid hasn’t said or written a word of support for JKR.

Spoiler alert
She wrote The Mermaid’s Singing and the fact that a trans woman character is a serial killer hasn’t brought her any death threats etc. JKR has a character who uses a woman’s coat as a disguise
I think Val is hoping no one will remember.
She most certainly isn’t pro women, she is only pro herself and would go to the opening of a fridge if it paid enough.

one I can't remember the title of, about a tv personality that kidnapped, tortured and murdered girls.

The Wire in the Blood. She based him on Savile.
