In the Times today, how do these books find publishers:

This book doesn’t sound like it was written by an adult.

Also this line “How can someone who created fantasy novels possibly think biological sex is real”she wonders.

That pretty much sums up the anger towards JK. And when you read it like that, that so many think it is outrageous that she can both be a writer of fiction AND still believe in reality, you do have to laugh.

I wonder if anyone bravely slagging off JKR on twitter, from behind a rainbow anime avatar and anonymous name has ever seen historical pictures of marches, protests, police beatings, people standing up for their rights and the rights of others being hauled away by the police, the blood, the arrests, the “disappearances” in some parts of the world?

Do they honestly think a few hashtags is the height of political protest and all the old dinosaurs just went along with the establishment blindly?

Well. I would appreciate some more robust arguments from the snowflake sector. Surely there are some eloquent, intelligent commentators/writers amongst them?

Tomiwa Owolade, the author of the review, is very good.

The book sounds remarkably stupid. It's a wonder it got published.

Great review! Another great woman of African descent disproving the 'terfs and white supremacists' nonsense.

Tomiwa Owolade is male and I hope the Times gives him more work in future. dd is following him on Instagram since today.

I did not lose access to women’s sports and menstrual products, I continued to paint my nails and weep softly over Jane Austen novels.”

As several of the BTL posts said, this woman has never read an Austen novel.

MEEE-OWWW! That (the review) was quite an amazing read. For many of these books, one wonders: where are the editors?

Tomiwa Owolade is a very impressive young writer. I'm looking forward to his book on Black British identity:

I doubt truly good fantasy fiction can be written by someone who doesn't have a firm grasp of reality, and understand the difference.

caring about injustice should be something worthy of praise rather than derision

Of course it is. But caring about 'injustice' for some by inflicting injustice for one group of people by inflicting injustice on another group isn't. And being so prejudiced that you simply can't see that's what you're doing and blindly assuming other peoples valid objections is the 'prejudice' is shameful.

The article and the comments have improved my morning.

When I was a callow teenager sick of Great Literature, an inspired adult of my acquaintance showed me that Austen was actually funny - ' weeping softly' my arse.

The descriptions in this review sound more like relating to a rather different phenomenon, the 'social justice warrior'. I thought 'snowflake' was more applied to those who complain they need 'trigger warnings' for anything remotely challenging/upsetting, and 'safe spaces' from being intellectually/ethically challenged - which becomes untenable when denying the need for womens physical safe spaces.

This quote from the book also makes me roll my eyes:

“when it comes to those feminists in the British media who have taken it upon themselves over the course of the last decade to single out and denounce trans people, I have struggled to understand their perspective for years”.

I wonder if she's read anything by British feminists? Books, articles? Maybe interviewed them, as journalists are supposed to do?

I loved this comment, and so did my 17 year old dd who read all of Jane Austen without any weeping:

"Willoughby is exactly the sort of man who would wear a t-shirt saying "this is what a feminist looks like". I fear Bingley might utter the phrase "Be kind"."
