The Mayo Clinic on breast pain

The Mayo Clinic is a US based international health organisation. Their health and medical information will usually be in the first few hits of a search.

What happens if you search ‘breast pain’.

The Mayo Clinic tells you that ‘ it can occur in men, women and transgender people’.

The next paragraph is about the timing of pain. Then it talks about men. Then it talks about transgender women and transgender men.

Not once, not once, does it address women.

I guess this is just another rant to add to the list. Women are being ignored yet again. More specifically, women’s health which has been sidelined throughout history is now being actively ignored.

This is a slightly misleading description, if you mean this article www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/breast-pain/symptoms-causes/syc-20350423

Where you say 'the next paragraph is about timing of pain' - this is actually about the pain in relation to menstrual cycle, so by inference, female breast pain.

Don't misunderstand me, I agree women's health is shockingly sidelined. I lost the entirety of my 30s to undiagnosed endometriosis. But I don't think this article is an example of the problem.

I think the article takes the position that the default and most common breast pain is female, but adds that it can occur in both sexes and transgender people - which is true - my thin and normally flat-chested husband developed painful 'breasts' due to oedema.

This paragraph is pretty problematic.

The whole article is focused on women. The references to men and trans women are there because everything else is about women.

Look for reasons to be offended and you'll find them. However ridiculous they are.

Breast pain mainly occurs in women, but men are the first people mentioned in the article.

Women are only mentioned once more, in a brief reference to menopause.

Where you say 'the next paragraph is about timing of pain' - this is actually about the pain in relation to menstrual cycle, so by inference, female breast pain.

Why by inference? Why not explicitly, just as men and trans people are mentioned explicitly?

More likely to affect people in their 20s and 30s, as well as people in their 40s who are transitioning to menopause

What does this refer to? TM on cross-sex hormones? Or women who are experiencing an early menopause? Does this mean it is unusual in women in their 50s experiencing menopause at the normal age?

The next page states

Breast pain is more common among people who haven't completed menopause, although it may occur after menopause. Breast pain can also occur in men who have gynecomastia, and in transgender people who are undergoing gender reassignment.

Yet again, it's fine to mention men but not women.

It's an obscene article.

It is a bit confusing!

My read is-

Woman default.

Males mentioned specifically as happens to them and loads think breast stuff only female.

I agree it's badly written but not seeing huge problem tbh.

NHS page for this doesn't even mention women. Or males.

Which is way worse.

They do mention Meno so if read on aha women.

Males not mentioned at all which is not great. Big issue with men assuming can't get breast cancer. This to me is related.

CheeseMmmm · 16/01/2022 04:20

And what's wrong with transitioning to menopause?

It's a transition. Transition is not a dirty word!

If so the trans Siberian service is fucked and it's a brilliant thing Grin

Transition means move from here to there. Generally not a tiny distance.

I'm currently transitioning from the middle bit of our lives. Through changes to hormones and all that entails. To the bit where you have to keep eye on bones strength and hopefully get to point where want a chair that tips you up and maybe a bath with a side door. The things I've started getting mailshots for including actually really nice looking retirement homes.

Perfectly good use of word transition.

CheeseMmmm · 16/01/2022 04:23

Better than the usual definition when periods stop.

Which ignores totally fact it's not just like boom done.

Far rather transition, acknowledging it's a process that takes time.

Than the only thing matters is can she produce a baby patriarchal view.
