Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Recommendations for women's groups

Musomama1 · 13/01/2022 18:23

Is anyone a member of a women's group and could recommend? For all the issues being discussed on here? Or what can I actually do.

I'm still in the angry phase of all of this, I'd heard some of the hoopla with gender identity online and in the news over the years and not really had an opinion, but that's changed - literally had no idea of this new phase of mysogyny and how far it's going.

I guess I want to do something, get active in some way, hats off to the legends who went to a swimming pool wearing beards.

Thank you in advance.

You could look for a ReSisters group in your local area.

ArabellaScott · 13/01/2022 20:21

Fair Play for Women
A Woman's Place
ForWomen Scotland
Merched Cymru
MakeMoreNoise (facebook)
Glinner's newsletter/The Mess We're In
KeepPrisons Single Sex
Transgender Trend
Safer Schools Alliance

For a wee start.

If you're on Twitter there are groups, too, I believe.

Dinosaurwoman · 13/01/2022 20:25

Sex matters

Isthatthebestyoucando · 13/01/2022 20:26

What area are you in? My ReSisters group has joined Womens Rights Network, they may work the other way around by directing you to a local group.

Musomama1 · 13/01/2022 21:28

Thank you everyone, 26Isthatthebestyoucando I am in the south east, West Sussex.

The only issue is, as soon as you start saying this stuff you're branded some transphobic nutjob. There needs to be more JK Rowling's speaking out and making it ok to question without getting shut down.

Thanks 21ArabellaScott wow that is a lot! Great there are so many.

On Facebook and Twitter search your area for Women's Network or Feminist Network. West Sussex has an active group.

Women's Rights Network on Twitter will direct you to your most local group if you DM them.

Funny that innit

Acatcalledprince · 13/01/2022 23:31

You'd be surprised how many people will agree with you! Angry is good. Keep that anger and chanel it into your local group.

Don't get distracted by the squirrels and insults, stay focused on what you're fighting for, the rights of women and girls.

LightningJenny · 14/01/2022 12:45

I feel the same way. I want to get active too!

Scraggythang · 14/01/2022 13:08

I’d like to just have a real life conversation with someone who see’s through the bullshit.

Can’t find anything in my area. My local feminist group isn’t an option.

purpleboy · 14/01/2022 13:28

FiLiA are always looking for volunteers. There are many areas to get involved in including funding, social media, interviewers, organising the annual conference. Which I believe is the largest international feminist conference.
They are a great charity which sadly get overlooked as this topic is not their only focus. But they do crucial work.

Fab, thanks for that, purple.
Musomama1 · 14/01/2022 15:39

Thank you 28purpleboy this is taking a lot of research, maybe a pinned post on how to get active? I wonder how much effect looking at Mumsnet has with policy makers, as in looking for popularity of opinions etc. Surely this forum gets looked at for data?

Is there an end to the angry phase of this? Anyone actually got there?
CatsOperatingInGangs · 15/01/2022 16:44

Contact @WomensRightsNet on twitter and they’ll direct you to your nearest group.

Phobiaphobic · 15/01/2022 16:49

There's a local Resisters group near me but the link on the main website just goes to their twitter profile. I want to DM them about meet ups but they don't follow me. Anyone got any bright ideas about how I can contact them without outing myself on Twitter?

Musomama1 · 17/01/2022 10:42

Think I'm in the sad phase, probably will end up being in the resigned phase though. The trans women in female sports thing has been killing me. When you read about it, it's like falling down a rabbit hole of illogical thinking. I'm not a crier, but I've found myself crying several times over this. Female sport would become meaningless. I think it's one of the most mysoginistic moves I've ever seen in the Western world.

Where are all the prominent feminists? Caitlin Moran et al? Probably worried about the death threats and career kill speaking up gets you. What a mess that women can't express their true feelings and concerns without getting the bigot label.

Sorry I know I'm ranting on this, I need a women's group to plug into asap!! And am trying to contact some of these groups.

Phobiaphobic I'm trying to contact Resisters too, via facebook, they look good but haven't replied to my facebook PM yet.

It's a shitty situation, watching women's rights being dismantled and women silenced and the 2nd class status of women being reinforced and supported by the media, the government, the NHS, schools, the police, and yes, big name feminists.

So I think it's quite natural to be angry and sad. It's not something to grieve for, though, we haven't yet lost everything. So it's not something I anticipate 'getting over'. I am sort of resigned to being angry, sad and determined until women's rights are protected again and no child is ever told they are 'in the wrong body' or given unevidenced and possibly dangerous medical treatment that isn't necessarily going to help them.

TheABC · 17/01/2022 11:22

FWIW, I think this board: the FWR board, is one of the biggest and most inclusive groups I have ever joined.

I am definitely up for Filia 2022 and I am taking a look at the volunteering section, now.

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 17/01/2022 12:59

Quick warning (depressing as it is) that the Misogynist Monitors may be watching this thread & looking for ways in to feminist groups.

Musomama1 · 18/01/2022 07:59

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn who are the Misogynist Monitors?

OP posts:
EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 18/01/2022 08:44

They’re a rather sad group of transactivists on Twitter, who make it their business to monitor this board and report all the posts they don’t like. They’ll probably report this one.

Some of them would probably be delighted to have the chance to infiltrate feminist groups. It’s been done before - hence the need for caution, sadly.

Musomama1 · 18/01/2022 09:13

Sorry for causing any issues.
