School speaker - LGBT session - best resource

Hi there,

I work in a school and one of our PHSCE session will involve an outside speaker on LGBT issues. I have some input in who it is so I know I do not want Stonewall, Mermaids or any charity that subscribes to gender ideology and spends most of their time talking about that. Unfortunately, I don't know of any that are non-biased and factual - can any of you mumsnetters suggest an LGBT organisation that doesn't push Stonewall's agenda? I would suggest LGB alliance but I think my school would dismiss this.

Thank you,

Update - no joy unfortunately. I had a brilliant call with Genspect but school is reluctant to have them in as “there are different views on this” in the school. The member of SLT I spoke to then made a convoluted comparison to racism which I quickly said this issue was not comparable to. Overall feeling very blue and disheartened. It makes me want to leave my school. Sorry it’s not better news!

Really sorry to hear that, Dinosaur - although not altogether surprised.

Do you think the conversation can or will go anywhere else, or is that it, done, now?

Honestly, I really wish schools wouldn't do any of this. I don't need other people I don't know trying to tell my kids anything about what they think about sexuality. I have no reason to think teachers have any special insight and quite a lot to think they don't.

Don't schools have a duty to balance "different views"?

This is listed as a requirement in the statutory PSHE guidance from DfE.

Resources should also be sensitive to pupils’ experiences as some may have already been exposed or at risk of content being taught. You should ensure that resources do not exhibit any content that may provoke distress.
We are aware that topics involving gender and biological sex can be complex and sensitive matters to navigate. You should not reinforce harmful stereotypes, for instance by suggesting that children might be a different gender based on their personality and interests or the clothes they prefer to wear. Resources used in teaching about this topic must always be age-appropriate and evidence based. Materials which suggest that non-conformity to gender stereotypes should be seen as synonymous with having a different gender identity should not be used and you should not work with external agencies or organisations that produce such material. While teachers should not suggest to a child that their non-compliance with gender stereotypes means that either their personality or their body is wrong and in need of changing, teachers should always seek to treat individual students with sympathy and support.
You should work together with parents on any decisions regarding your school’s treatment of their child, in line with the school’s safeguarding policy and the statutory guidance on working together to safeguard childrenn_.
When deciding if a resource is suitable, you should consider if it:
• aligns to the teaching requirements set out in the statutory guidance
• would support pupils in applying their knowledge in different contexts and settings
• is age-appropriate - think about the age, developmental stage and background of your pupils
• is evidence-based and contains robust facts and statistics
• fits into your curriculum plan
• is from a credible source

And

"When using an external provider it has to be politically impartial."

If a provider takes a TWAW position that is not 'politically impartial' but is ideologically based.

I would anonymously report this to OFSTED tbh. I'm tired of SLT or HT failing in their responsibilities. This is all on the government website. They should know this.
