Lisa from Murray Blackburn Mackenzie will be on the show today to discuss the SNP manifesto on GRA reform.

Thank you for the heads up!

It's encouraging that this is being covered so soon into the new year. Sends a positive message that WH are going to keep up their scrutiny of the erosion of women's rights now they're finally on the case.

Good, will listen later.

nauticant · 05/01/2022 10:46

I appreciate that Emma Barnett makes good interviews by challenging the interviewees, whatever their position and whether or not she agrees with them, but I was wearied by the theme of "isn't the problem here that women's groups haven't been insistent enough to make sure they get a hearing with the relevant minister?"

SpindleyCrow · 05/01/2022 10:52

Yy, nauticant. The question should be, Why have ministers been ignoring women's groups for so long? What social structures are at play that even allow that to happen?

Agree. Lisa was great but this was such a silly question.

I understand that overall it makes the interaction of the BBC with the issue more impartial but it got in the way of the substance to a large degree which was pretty unhelpful.

For anyone listening to the programme later, make sure you catch the earlier segment with Pragna Patel discussing identity politics. That was more worthwhile because the discussion did engage with the actual issues.

SpindleyCrow · 05/01/2022 10:59

Thanks for the tip, nauticant. Will do.

Oh good, i'll be interested in Lisa's insight. I've not heard her talk, she seems to be a big brain from what I see on twitter. For "big brain" read "has common sense".

It's important to hear from people who are experts in their field - I think it's time to expand beyond the perspective of expert patients, professional trans people, trans activists and MRA who have dominated the discourse in media - pretty much until the Nolan podcasts.

I'd like to hear more from philosophers, sociologists, lawyers, justice, criminologists, psychiatrists, physiotherapists, nurses, counsellors, GPs, midwives, teachers, sports coaches, politicians, councillors and anyone with skills and expertise who have considered the impact of gender on their specific field.

Experts are good to hear from because they seem to be universally able to let another person finish their sentence, answer a question, be polite - and they mange to do all that without waving a flag. Refreshing.
