Radio 4 Science Stories - "Puberty blockers are lifesaving and natural puberty kicks in when they are stopped"

On just now, Science Stories Series 4 'How Much Testosterone Makes You A Man'. F. McConnell said puberty blockers are lifesaving and natural puberty occurs when they are stopped. There was no questioning of this claim. A male Professor uses John Money's abuse of twin boys resulting in suicide to explain that gender identity exists. Wrong body and male brains in female bodies are talked about without being questioned. It seemed like pure propaganda with no balance.

That's dangerous. And untrue.

Oh dear. Will listen and use the handy complaints form. Again.

Dangerous propaganda, and after the Dershowitz debacle. Are there no grown ups in over Christmas?

There's another thread where I posted this:

One of the premises of the programme was that in addition to the changes to the body, testosterone operates on the brain to create a "masculine gender identity" and as I understood it, they were trying to be "scientific" and so the comment about "we aren’t sure what the exact effect of testosterone is" was saying that the "scientific facts" of pinning down the "creation of a gender identity" weren't yet fully established.

An interesting programme with some fascinating facts in but spoiled with pseudoscientific #genderwoowoo. It had a gullible professor of neuroscience whose name I have now forgotten. Well, either gullible or extremely cynical being willing to put politics ahead of science.

Cross-posted, sorry. I did check but the other thread hadn't been posted when I started writing this one.

Putting some true interesting parts in makes people believe it's all true, after all it's a Radio 4 science programme. There's no way this programme wasn't designed for the purpose of promoting anabolic steroid use in women. And gaslighting people for being concerned about the health effects on kids of chemo drugs being used off-label experimentally to affect the pituitary gland to cause puberty to stop and causing many other harmful effects. The guests chosen were both completely biased. The professor didn't mention that John Money was a pedophile who abused both boys when he talked about Money's experimentation on the boys. I will make a complaint but it is a bit late now, ordinary people will parrot these claims.

The lies and gaslighting never ends does it.
BUT - wasn't Ben Hunte speedily dropped when they realised that his "journalistic" contributions were full of bias and errors? Presumably the same could happen to these "journalists" who made the programme - especially if they making inaccurate claims about the medical treatment of children?

Abitofalark · 03/01/2022 22:35

Not sure that the premise contained in the title question is correct.

What's interesting is that this programme was broadcast in December 2016 and again tonight. Hm...I wonder why they dug it up just now. Or why they thought it was worth digging up, ever.

Also, although they have podcasts of some other episodes, I couldn't find one of this.

The presenter Naomi Alderman wrote a science fiction book about what would happen if women were the physically stronger, more aggressive sex, able to inflict harm.

@BitMuch
Maybe you could try Feedback too. Don’t they sometimes read out listeners responses?

Wait, so, one minute, we're told that trans people already have brains of their "actual gender" (which happens to not match their sex, which is apparently why they must modify their bodies to match their brains...), then next minute we're told being injected with cross-sex hormones actually alters the brain (I can actually somewhat believe that), and that's how the "correct" brain gender identity is formed?
... So which is it?

Note: as a female bodied person with a somewhat masculine (and happily neurodiverse) personality, I can totally believe that certain brains differ from the stereotypical gender norms attached to their sex, and that this might be at least partly due to certain bodies naturally producing a somewhat different mix of sex hormones. I can easily believe my testosterone levels are near the upper end of the female spectrum. That doesn’t make me man, and that doesn't make me want to be a man. I don't need to be injected with cross-sex hormones to maintain my "masculine" personality, my body already produces all the hormones I need for that.
So what is really going on with transmen? If they are already more masculine in their heads than I am, why don't they just go "fuck you, world, this what a real man looks like" while flashing their man-breasts? Why do they seem so shy and fragile, and eager to change themselves to comply to outside norms? (not very "manly", is it?) And why would they need hormones to further masculinise their brains, if they already have man brains?

"F. McConnell said puberty blockers are lifesaving and natural puberty occurs when they are stopped."

You'd have to be remarkably naive to take any of Freddy's assertions at face value. I don't think I've seen any word or action emanating from them that wasn't based purely on self-interest.
