Changing gender in your passport

Just reading this interesting debate between Kathleen Stock and Robin White in Prospect magazine.
www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/essays/gender-wars-two-opposing-perspectives-on-the-trans-and-womens-rights-debate
This line just screamed at me "For good practical reasons, the UK passport office will allow individuals to change their gender in their passport long before they can make an application for the GRC required to change their legal sex". This I did not know?! What ARE the good practical reasons? Travelling abroad for surgery?

@Skysblue

Right so is this about forcing female airport staff to pat down transwomen?

Is it about having access to female toilets etc at foreign airports, perving in the female changing rooms and eg removing muslim women’s ability to remove their headscarf in a female-only space?

Is it about not eg getting arrested in Dubai, where it’s a criminal offence for a man to dress as a woman? (Stag holidaymakers: not do drag in Dubai, you will spent the night in jail).

Or is it just men screaming into the wind “validate me validate me” I don’t even know.

Female airport staff already have to pat down transwomen, they have no way to opt out, neither do female police officers or female prison officers.

In the UK you won't need to show a passport prior to going through security as a departing passenger as this information is stored on the APIS declaration you did online. You will only show a boarding card to prove you have a valid ticket to travel.

Security scanners look for items standing proud of the body and use the same technology as reversing sensors on a car. If the female pattern is selected and someone with a penis is scanned, it's going to look like an item hidden in the crotch area. The staff don't care about gender identity, they do care about stopping the next Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab.

As an arriving passenger the chances are you'll be going through a machine that checks your biometric features against those stored on your passport chip. If a human processes you through a passport desk, he or she will be looking for the same things. Would this fly in Dubai or Egypt or Nigeria? Who knows - but an F instead of an M isn't going to fool anyone. Especially as the rest of the world knows western countries allow these lies on passports.

Forgot to add you'll need to show a passport at the boarding gate, but that is staffed by ground handling agent staff on behalf of the airline and not security staff on behalf of the airport. The two systems are separate. Some carriers demand a passport for a domestic flight as part of their company policy, I guess it makes things easier for them even if it isn't a legal requirement.

Well said @OldCrone

I agree that Its really much easier, simpler and ethically sound for society to learn that some men like to look like women and vice versa.

It’s really not a decent thing to try to persuade others that you are something that you are not. Am trying to think if we ever think this is a good idea in any other scenario.
