Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Watching Canada - could it happen here?

A new bill in Canada will, if passed, outlaw the airing of gender critical views, and women's rights activists will not be able to speak about sex-based rights.

There is a lot of opposition and protests, but it demonstrates how successfully the trans/gender queer ideology has infiltrated the whole system (funded by the big pharma, but you know all about that).

Sometimes it feels that Scotland is moving closer to this point; could it happen here?

I would hope Maya's appeal result would prevent it.

Lliikklkkj · 27/11/2021 20:17

I think being part of the UK offers some protection. Otherwise it would have happened already

Evelyn52 · 27/11/2021 20:19

What the hell has happened to Canada? Having visited and worked with many Canadians (although many years ago now) I can't believe this has happened to the people/place I loved. We were actually considering moving back last year but that is off the table!

HereticFanjo · 27/11/2021 20:34

I honestly don't understand Canada. It's like Stockholm Syndrome.

nauticant · 27/11/2021 20:45

On the current trajectory I don't think it will happen. One of the most significant shifts I've seen is that in the UK media serious professional journalists are realising that following the #bekind, accept what you're told, don't rock the boat, approach is turning people into fools, while being brave is enhancing/making reputations.

You'll have seen the glee with which some of political interviewers on the telly were asking politicians "what is a woman?" knowing that they would make themselves look like complete idiots and as a result guaranteeing some good telly.

Which bill do you mean? I can’t find anything about it.

CheeseMmmm · 28/11/2021 00:38

I had quick Google no luck.

Link please OP!

Here's an article:
thepostmillennial.com/canadian-transphobia-gender-critical-feminism

from the article:
"In June 2021, Liberal Party MP David Lametti introduced Bill C-36. It proposes amendments to the Human Rights Act and Criminal Code concerning hate speech and hate crimes.

'The bill defines 'hate speech' as the content of a communication that expresses detestation or vilification of an individual or group of individuals on the basis of a prohibited ground of discrimination. These grounds of discrimination are race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression…'"

Which doesn't seem unreasonable except for the way that saying you don't think women should have to share hostel rooms or showers with trans women because they are male is seen as detestation, or pointing out when yet another transwoman commits a crime against women or children is considered to be vilification.

No sorry - we’re Terf Island. The women here are steadfast, intelligent, powerful, amazing, and strong, oh and really funny. We will and are leading a pathway to sanity and respect for all.
Scotland is moving closer; we have to support ForwomenScot and others, we fight it.
I sometimes think we should employ Diana Riggs advice -“men are frightened of mockery.”

OH FUCK.

SO SO SORRY.

The link goes on for AGES about c16.

Way along it talks about c36.

I am asking for MN to delete those posts.

LobsterNapkin · 28/11/2021 03:17

Honestly it's so depressing. Part of why I have moved out to the woods.

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 28/11/2021 04:16

I think there are a lot of similarities between Canada and Scotland and that may be why Scotland seems to be heading the same way. I am Scottish and lived in Canada for a while.

Both are smaller countries next to a larger, more powerful country. Both seem to take pride in being , or saying they are very different from their larger more dominant neighbour. Part of that seems to have become about being seen to be more tolerant and Liberal than their neighbour. Scotland is ( rightly imo) proud of its attempts to be welcoming to refugees for instance.

Added to which recent US and UK leaders have added to the desire to distance themselves politically. Nicola clearly likes to do things differently to Boris and to be seen doing that.

Unfortunately the GRA has become one of the things the Scottish government believe makes them look more forward thinking and more tolerant than England. And is one of the reasons they have demonstrated they care more about how things look than caring about the women and children this will impact.

Sorry I know the op is about Canada, but this was in response to @Toseland

This is incredibly serious. Please don't imagine that a bill of this kind can never arrive in the UK, because it absolutely can & will unless we push back hard & relentlessly against it. Our fundamental rights & freedoms are at stake
