..against Self ID outside Leinster House.

It was my very first protest Grin and I was a bit nervous going in on my own, but everyone I spoke to was really lovely and I'm so glad I went.

It was wonderful to have these conversations with other women about Self ID in Ireland and know that we are not alone. There was a few speakers, including Ceri Black, Graham Linehan and Laoise Uí Aodha de Brún. All very inspirational, it feels like there is some momentum gathering.

I hope this is the first of many!!

I wish I could have been there!!

Joolsin · 27/11/2021 16:42

I didn't know it was happening, or I would have been there. How did you find out about it?

CreepingDeath · 27/11/2021 16:47

I only found out about it yesterday - I'm on the mailing list for the Countess, they didn't give too much notice, I think to stop any counter-protests.

Another group there was Radicailin , they were handing out flyers. I took a few home, I might post them in a few letterboxes around where I live Grin.

Anyway, there was a good turnout, maybe 40 people or more, so I think they will organise more meetups. If you're on social media #SaveOurSpaces is the one they are using.

Also there was a photographer from the Irish Times, so hopefully it will get some coverage.

Sounds fab. Well done, OP.

2319inprogress · 27/11/2021 17:12

Sounds fantastic! Keep making noise Grin

Carriemac · 27/11/2021 17:29

Woo woo go Irish Women!

ScreamingMeMe · 27/11/2021 17:33

Well done!

TinaBarrow · 27/11/2021 17:40

Brilliant 👏👏👏

3timeslucky · 27/11/2021 17:50

I was there briefly. With more notice I'd have been better organised. I understand why it was done as it was but wonder what else could be done to spread the word next time. There has to be a next time, right?

I've marched through town any number of times during the last 30+ years for abortion rights but it never felt as subversive as being there today asking for recognition of the difference between sex and gender, and for protections for women and children. How mad is that?

It is completely bonkers.

ForeverFaithless · 27/11/2021 18:40

Fecks sake, how did I miss this?
I really would have liked to be there, instead I was fighting with the jungle of trees at the back of my garden!

3timeslucky · 27/11/2021 18:42

For anyone who couldn't be there

PleasantBirthday · 27/11/2021 18:43

I didn't know about it either but was with you in spirit!! Here though, I'm so annoyed by men calling women who attended "gowls" and another big boy saying it's Brits not minding their own business. A man saying that. They're completely blind to themselves.

Udouhun · 27/11/2021 18:49

Amazing OP. Well done!!!!

WomenR · 27/11/2021 19:34

Thank you all so much for today! I’m sorry I wasn’t able to attend as I have some difficult personal circumstances. You are leading the way. 👏👏💐💐

CreepingDeath · 27/11/2021 20:05

Hopefully there will be more coming soon.

Well done all. I was in town today and would definitely have dropped by if I'd known about this.

It's funny you mention marching for abortion rights. All the Irish TRAs on Twitter are saying 'where were these 'feminists' when WE repealed the 8th. The trans community helped us repeal the 8th'.

They want to rewrite history. Their narrative is the 8th amendment was only repealed due to the social media generation and the trans community. They never mention or honour the women who campaigned for this during the decades when they were vilified for it.

The gall of them.

Joolsin · 27/11/2021 23:44

I began feeling uneasy about the whole TRA thing on the day of the abortion ref results. Went to hotel in Ballsbridge for celebrations and among the mostly middle-aged women speakers was a young gay man (blue hair, etc) who stood up and announced that this was a "queer" people's triumph. I thought "this is odd, it can't affect you personally" and wondered what he was on about. Now I know.

Rhannion · 28/11/2021 00:30

Well done fabulous women and men. Solidarity from 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 We are all in this together and we will prevail

I'm also hating the idea that feminism in Ireland belongs to a small self appointed committee and the rest of us are shut out.

Absolutely- my feminism is my own, well thought through. I'm not blindly following anyone. I deeply admire Ceri Black for overcoming her previous experiences. I am heavily influenced by what I know about attachment and trauma in the developing brain. These are my own readings and thoughts.

It would have been too far for me to travel for this protest, though I didn't know about it. I expect that this will grow and grow.

@NitroNine

I saw - by chance - a picture on Twitter taken at an angle clearly designed to show as few attendees as possible; and the comments full of Brits mocking Glinner & the low turnout. Clearly just grand for inhabitants of TERF Island to weigh in if they’re doing so from The Right Side [Of History] Hmm There’s no chance you’d get any TRA to acknowledge why it’d to be organised at the last minute, Because That Never Happens. When they’ve two people and a disgruntled ferret show up for a well-publicised [counter-]protest, however, it is of course because Transphobia, Threats, & Being The Most Vulnerable Minority.

The whole “feminism should centre trans women” business makes me absolutely rage. Anyone who comes out with that very clearly doesn’t know feminism from a hole in the ground, but somehow they’ve managed to push the idea they’re the “real” feminists: may the women of Ireland soon be successful in changing that narrative.

@Joolsin: that must have been a genuinely frightening thing to hear, as well as enraging - as @justaftb says, the absolute gall of it to jump in as the fight was won and claim a women’s victory as their’s. Rewriting history is a bit of a speciality though I suppose, all the business about trans people having been everywhere always - but also cruelly crushed by colonialism. Maybe your one using what so many people still think of as a terrible slur was anticipating (permanent) uterus transplants for trans women being just around the corner so they’d need access to abortion services too?

Where would they get the uteruses to transplant? They'd need some dead women of child bearing age. I'd opt out of organ donation if I thought my uterus was going to be used to support the psychological wellbeing of a TRA.

I'm very confused why @NitroNine had her comment deleted?
