Anyone know anything about Rights of Women group

I've just seen that Rights of Women is fundraising and in principle I'd be really happy to support them. However, I'm only prepared to do that if they are truly helping women, and have not been captured. So, does anyone know about them and whether they do actually fight for women's rights?

Ignore this, I've dug a bit further. I won't be supporting them.

The website looks straightforward: rightsofwomen.org.uk/get-information/legal-information/

I got the email from CrowdJustice drum and was wondering the same thing. Can I ask what you've discovered to put you off?

On the recruitment page for legal advice volunteers, they say that only women can apply (I think it's the same for all the roles), and that this is an Occupational Requirement where the Equality Act 2010, Schedule 9 Part I applies. Then they say that they particularly welcome applications from Black and minoritised women, trans women and older and disabled women.
So, the occupational requirement that you are a woman doesn't actually apply, unless you accept that TWAW. Which I don't, so I can't support them. A pity, it looks like they do really good work, but this is my hill.

From their response to the 2018 GRA consultation:

We recognise that trans women experience intersectional discrimination, harassment and violence both because they are trans and because they are women. We understand that it is our duty as an equality organisation to address this.

That's wrong on two counts - firstly because trans women are not women, and secondly because women's organizations do not have a duty to solve all problems, least of all men's problems.

Also worth noting that they "particularly welcome applications from transwomen" as volunteers.

Ah ok - another one bites the dust. Thanks for saving me the trouble of looking into it.

Thanks for highlighting this drum123, we have a Christmas Market this weekend and wanted a women's charity to donate to. Hopefully we'll have a few hundred to send to them by Monday.

Definitely one to avoid then. Thank you.

RoW's Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form, linked from this page rightsofwomen.org.uk/get-involved/volunteer-with-us/, asks unambiguously about 7 of the 9 protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010

Betcha can't guess which 2 they muddy the waters on!

Instead of asking explicitly about gender reassignment, they have "Do you identify as trans? A person is trans if they choose to live in a gender that is different to the one assigned at birth. This may or may not involve undergoing gender reassignment surgery."

Instead of sex, they have 'How would you describe your gender?', with options Female / Male / Non-binary / Unsure/questioning / Intersex / Prefer not to say / Prefer to self-describe / Other

...and a checkbox for 'I don't understand the question' Grin

What a mess, thanks OP for highlighting this as I had no idea

Fenlandia · 26/11/2021 16:54

Hang on, just realised that you can identify as Male for their gender question, but there is no option to identify as a gay man in the sexual orientation question (the options are Bisexual / Heterosexual/straight / Gay woman/lesbian / Prefer not to say / Prefer to self-describe )

I'm so confused
