Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Sistersong. Novels promoting ideology should come with a health warning.

I like to read feminist literature. Silence of the Girls, that kind of thing. I usually find my next book through 'Customers who like x like y algorithms'. Generally it works, I've read some less historically accurate novels and some less of a feminist stance, but usually where it lacks in one it makes up in another.

So that's how I arrived at Sistersong. Early characterisation seemed to be a bit two dimensional, slut, virgin, tomboy. Fine. Characters grow etc.

I've two hours reading yet and the ideology has gone from subtle to sledgehammer. I've somehow been tricked into reading a book that presents non binary as the obvious choice for progressive ancient Britons. Meanwhile, the two female characters are trundling along with very little character growth and in one case, very dislikeable and the other, character growth going backwards.

Anyway, just had to vent because of course now I have to finish the bloody thing and can't even leave an honest review.

I found it on Amazon and the author bio says she hosts an intersectional podcast so that should have been a clue Wink

BelleOfTheProvince · 21/11/2021 22:04

Lesson learned I guess. I just trusted Amazon algorithms to avoid rubbish. I suppose I should just be greatful they're not pushing incel pick up books.

You do know that there is absolutely no obligation to finish a book you hate? Life is too short!

BelleOfTheProvince · 21/11/2021 22:16

I know, it's a thing.

I've read worse. I read the first fifty shades and one thing led to another and I read the trilogy.
It was not good.

You don't have to finish it
If Kindle, you can return it.

Good question OP
But looking at Ts and Cs, I think yes.

If you liked Silence of the Girls I'd recommend anythign by Natalie Haynes.

I know, spectacularly missing the point.

DaisyNGO · 21/11/2021 23:07

I suppose I'm thinking you can call it an accidental order as it wasn't correctly described?

Have read Children of Jocasta and Ships. Any other good ones?

Perhaps you need to write Amazon algorithms 😅

Why can you not leave an honest review? Your comments on character development, and preaching seem very valid and constructive criticisms.

Snugglepumpkin · 22/11/2021 15:25

If you are reading it on your kindle you can just give it a 1 star rating without having to write anything & you can't see who left the star only ratings (or if you can, I've never managed to find where).

God sake! I have this book, I bought it as I thought the blurb/reviews looked good and I’d just read Silence of the Girls! In bloody hardback as well. Going to put it in the recycling without even opening the cover now!

I'd hate to put you off if it's something you might like despite the gender bollocks. The bit that did it for me was when the 'non binary' character stealthed a girl into dancing with her. Initially I thought it was a lesbian scene and thought it was a bold move. It then became clear with that scene and a clearly 'dysphoric about period' scene, coupled with the apparent character regression that did it for me. It depends on personal bullshit tolerance I suppose and mine is low.

You never actually own a kindle book, only 'rent' it from Amazon. I've not bought one since I found that out.
