University of Kent survey

I really don't want to believe that the people who signed off this research knew how it was going to be presented on MN. I grabbed enough info to have a dig about, I really hope that the psychology dept of Kent University didn't intentionally seek to paint the many thousands of MN users as bigots.
But it appears that the deleting of everything to do with it suggests the people responsible are aware of unethical it is.

Good point.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/11/2021 19:10

Maybe we should contact the ethics department.

Leafstamp · 20/11/2021 19:16

Thread has been deleted due to them encouraging PMs, which MN doesn’t allow by researchers/media.

MillicentFaucet · 20/11/2021 19:16

I'm not letting this drop.
All the women seeking support about miscarriage?
All the women talking about rape and abuse?
The women asking for support to leave the men who beat them?
Imagine wanting to paint them as bigots knee-deep in conspiracy theories about transgender people.
Just unbelievable

Just seen a deletion for that account from earlier today on another thread.

Doubletoilandtrouble · 20/11/2021 19:18

To be honest, I think someone who has grabbed some info should complain to the ethics committee within the psychology department.

The study would have needed ethical sign off in order to be published. Complaints to the ethics committee could have a positive impact for further studies.

MichelleScarn · 20/11/2021 19:19

The questions were ridiculous, I wish I'd managed to screen grab them

NutellaEllaElla · 20/11/2021 19:19

Can anyone fill me in about this?

Leafstamp · 20/11/2021 19:21

If you figure out the best action to take OP, or anyone, let us know.

Doubletoilandtrouble · 20/11/2021 19:24

I didn’t open the study unfortunately. It was posted on at least two threads, derailing the discussion and against MN guidelines.

Apparently it was also stupid, highly biased questions which showed a complete lack of understanding of feminist theory. Along the lines of “are you scared of transwomen” as opposed to “do you see any issues with male bodied people in single sex spaces”.

Obviously they were expecting the silly, bigoted FWR posters to uncritically fill in their ridiculous survey and prove themselves to be the bigots the study purported them to be Hmm

Leafstamp · 20/11/2021 19:30

For some clues as to the nature of the questions - have a look at the exchanges with KentpsychMB from 15:07 on this thread

I think I counted six, including the one they created on the Surveys board. It was definitely at least five - they said they didn't know the rules as they'd never used MN, so never a great start.

Bananageddon · 20/11/2021 19:40

I still have the link to the survey (I opened it earlier to take a look) and screenshots if anyone wants them

Lovelyricepudding · 20/11/2021 19:46

Asking women on here if theit gender is 'cis female' shows a complete lack of understanding. But the last page revealed the agenda - to establish which women are transphobes who will take part in anti-transwoman actions. And to make the bias clear it directs you to mermaids and gires (but strangely not sex matters or fair play for women)

Doubletoilandtrouble · 20/11/2021 19:56

I cannot decide whether the people behind this study are incredibly stupid or if they think we are incredibly stupid? What do everyone else think?

And to ask the question “is your gender cis female?” here? Grin GrinGrin

If it was April fools day, I would assume it was one of us, you know when you want to make it clear that it is a joke so nobody wastes any time ?

LizzieSiddal · 20/11/2021 19:58

The questions were very goady, almost like they were written by bored young teenagers.

DPotter · 20/11/2021 20:06

The fact that they admit / claim to not be aware of MN rules on posting is dodgy. As researchers they would have had to specify their source of survey subjects.

I did open the survey and it was written poorly - language was ambiguous, possibly double negatives etc. I wonder if it was a final BSc dissertation rather than post grad research. In my day we didn't have to get Ethics committee sign off for 3rd year dissertations, just tutor sign off.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 20/11/2021 20:09

I'm struggling to believe any university department signed that off as acceptable. It's very poorly constructed.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 20/11/2021 20:11

DPotter even at undergrad dissertation level they should have learnt how to construct the questions appropriately.

Appledrop · 20/11/2021 20:24

I have the link for that survey but not sure if I would be allowed to post it? I have it open on my laptop, forgot about it as was watching a film, clicked on it via the crisis midwife thread.

Lovelyricepudding · 20/11/2021 20:35

I suspect it was
PastMyBestBeforeDate · 20/11/2021 20:49

I wouldn't post the link Apple, not now anyway but it's worth taking screenshots and hanging on to the URL.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/11/2021 20:51

I believe everything has been archived and screenshots made of all the questions, I've just been talking about it on other social media.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 20/11/2021 21:21

I have the link too but not going to post it.
