Okay Mumsnetters, real headscratcher here. What do you all think. Woman is planning to go to new doctor who is a man. But now she hears through the grapevine that new doctor has become a trans woman. She wonders, should patients be told before the visit, or just show up and find out that Dr. John is now Dr. Jane? www.nytimes.com/2021/11/09/magazine/difficult-mother-in-law-ethics.html

I would expect to be told.
I would refuse to be treated by a doctor who thought a patient had no right to choose the sex of their doctor & if I had chosen a male doctor, I would expect to be treated by a male doctor.

I want a doctor who actually understands biology & who I would trust to not make me feel uncomfortable or vulnerable.

If a doctor believes they can change their sex, then I would not be comfortable being treated by them or trust anything they said, because our beliefs are so far apart we might as well be on different planets.

I wish I did not have to know a person's alternate gender identity. I don't object to people having variant gender identities, but I am tiring of the idea of bystanders being required by law to participate in validating those identities, however transitory aka "fluid" they are. But I think it is unethical for a doctor to blindside his patients by not alerting them in advance that he is going to expect them to treat him as a full fledged lady. Instead of concentrating on their own problems, they now have to worry about not using the wrong pronouns.
