Another bathroom one >D

So I came very early to Westfield shopping centre and was DESPERATE to go to the bathroom Blush

My baby's pushchair had no prayer in fitting in the small stalls and the disabled toilet needed a radar key. Anyways the nice security guard would have gladly opened the door for me but informed me the nice big children's bathroom facility was not far away. Good! I also need to BF.

The bathroom was busy (briefly, no worries) by a lone older lady Confused very strange, I thought! Then to be fair on the lady, if we go by everything that is said in MN, this was the only available bathroom that is self contained and maybe the lady felt safer there. Maybe she needed to do something private by the sink.

Where is this bathroom situation going to end in?! This is starting to really scare me Sad especially with 3 daughters

(Btw I saw this comic the other day and remembered this thread)

Not sure what your exact point is - you mean why was a woman without a child in the one designated for parents and children?

Helleofabore · 08/11/2021 10:32

Using the toilet or just the sink and mirror?

This shopping centre as a separate area for families (the logo shows a family with baby and all). With a small playground, children's murals on the walls (forest inspired or winnie the poo), changing areas, breastfeeding room, microwave AND an adult/child toilet room. Very nicely done

There is no confusion whether this is conventional toilet facilities or not Wink

The bathroom door was closed, I don't know. It was just a supposition

What has this got to do with sex and gender?

KaleKebab · 08/11/2021 13:38

I believe the OP is guessing the older lady was driven out of the women's toilets (into the mother & babies) due to fear of transwomen being present? I'm not entirely sure as the post is not 100% explicit.

There is a general point that if the only non-mixed-sex spaces remaining are the individual accessible cubicles currently mainly used by the disabled or those with children, then the usage pressure on those is going to increase.

It's quite possible that an increasing number of women will opt-out of the mixed-sex spaces and rely on those cubicles. And as, for many, it may take a personal bad experience in the mixed-sex loo to make that decision, I think we would a be a slow and steady increase on pressure on them.

The breakdown of norms will encourage that behaviour too - if men can use what were the women's facilities, why shouldn't women use the disabled?

Artichokeleaves · 08/11/2021 14:31

It's quite possible that an increasing number of women will opt-out of the mixed-sex spaces and rely on those cubicles.

An increasing number of women will have to or just accept they can only leave home for short periods of time as hijab fixing, peeing, catheterising, changing sanpro etc can only be done at home. Bladder leash; victorian women knew all about it. It played a very helpful part in controlling women and keeping them out of public life and important roles, and will certainly really help make sure that BAME women of minority religions, cultures, disabled women, traumatised women etc are handed some more barriers to make sure they don't think they belong in society.

This 'inclusive' agenda is the most wretchedly exclusionary, discriminatory sexist nightmare for many women, and yes it will significantly impact on disabled people too. But those pushing this while bellowing about 'being kind' quite openly and frankly refuse to care about people other than them.

VelvetChairGirl · 08/11/2021 18:45

Maybe she needed the space and the calm to do a insulin injection or change a colostrophy bag or all manner of other things that are none of your business.

I know the toilet/changing area your talking about, men are allowed in there too btw, and theres a lot of facilities in there and its quiet.

We do need to decide what is best for all users and make it clear.
I remember when DH was in charge of a baby in a nappy and a toddler, and used one of these family toilets. He was able to get his whole party in and lock the door, with no toddlers escaping. Very useful. But he said a mother was very aggrieved to see a man there. The sign said “parents” but she mentally translated it to “mothers”, because sometimes parents means mothers, sometimes it doesn’t…

MimiDaisy11 · 08/11/2021 23:01

I don’t see the issue. Presumably men can go in the family toilets. It might just be a case that she went in the first toilets she came across because she was desperate or didn’t know the place to know there are various options

This post is very confusing. All the winking and hinting. Spit it out OP!
