Pronouns in email

If someone were requested to state their pronouns, in their workplace.
Is there scope for anyone to choose any pronoun at all (presuming it’s not offensive).

I prefer the pronouns superhero/super self.
I wonder what action I can take if my stated pronouns are not respected by colleagues.

They are of course valid and anyone who doesn’t use them is creating literal violence to you and deserves to be cancelled.

Only if you're under thirty or possess a penis. I don't know why but this is true.
ArtemesiaK · 07/11/2021 18:00

I think I'd go for meh/meh....

NoNotMeNoSiree · 07/11/2021 18:01

Well yes, put what you like. Be prepared for people to think that you're just taking the piss and that you come across as a bit of a knob though.

Be careful what you wish for.

Long ago and far away I was the Station Manager at Ashford in Kent when British Rail insisted that staff wore name badges. Staff were allowed to have any name on the badge as some were nervous about displaying their real name, Believe it or not, we didnt always run a perfect train service.

One ticket clerk filled in the form for a badge in the name of 'Richard Head' (not his real name).

We made him wear it for a month before allowing him to order a replacement...

we/us

It shows your commitment to inclusivity.

I think you should go full on narcissist, OP.
How about ma’am/your imperial majesty? Accompanied by obligatory curtsey. Grin

That's a tide that flows both ways.

@robinmoirawhite
Grin
He got a replacement? Aw, should have let him keep it permanently.
Seeing as that's the name he said he went by.

lazylinguist · 07/11/2021 19:33

I prefer the pronouns superhero/super self.

As a language teacher I feel the need to point out that those aren't pronouns Grin. Mind you, neither are any of those made-up ones like 'zhe'. I mean... they're not even words, never mind pronouns!

We weren't that cruel. And the customers queueing for tickets had taught him a lesson.

So choose your pronouns carefully...

I’d be highly offended if someone thought my pronouns were a joke.

Are you saying my chosen pronouns aren’t valid? I tried zer but that didn’t sit right, tried xer for a bit then decider super self was much better.

I hate to say this Robin but I know someone called Richard Head. Perhaps you should have done something to stop the potential bullying of one of your team members...

hamstersarse · 08/11/2021 16:40

I honestly wouldn't be able to do this.

I know I am contrarian but it is fucking obvious to anyone what my bloody pronouns are.

It is infantile bullshit that adults need to stop blindly complying with

Surely there is scope to say "my pronouns are private and I'd rather not advertise them"? Such is the delusion.

Lucked · 08/11/2021 16:41

I would go for she/him

StillPerplexed · 08/11/2021 16:42

I'm not sure acting in bad faith is the best way to make whatever point you're trying to make.

I like those pronouns. Surely if people expect you to use their chosen pronouns then they need to respect yours also. It can't just go one way.

Whatinthelord · 08/11/2021 16:45

@hamstersarse pronouns aren’t really private though are they? as your pronouns are either what people use or what you tell them to use.

Remember pronouns don’t equal gender. They’re nothing to do with gender.

I try and avoid making jokes about someone's personal beliefs because I think it's discourteous. In return however, I ask that people do not expect me to share or endorse their beliefs. It normally works fine but with pronoun statements we seem to have reached a bit of an impasse and I don't know the way forward.

I though the point of pronouns were we could choose ones that we feel fit us best.

Genuine question, why wouldn’t mine be valid?

OP posts:
hamstersarse · 08/11/2021 16:48

@Floisme

I think the only thing people can do is be adult about it and politely refuse to participate.

Being asked to state pronouns in meeting and emails rather suggests they aren’t based on personal belief but on fact doesn’t it?
