Let's talk about catching those who spike drinks

I am getting really pissed off with the way that drink spiking is being covered in the news. It's all women and what they can do to avoid being poisoned (which is what it is after all). Let's talk about how to catch and prosecute the men instead. In that vein:

If nightclubs made everyone register their id when they entered (which is more or less what already happens with the welsh/scottish covid pass), and had working cctv, couldn't any spiking be investigated by searching the cctv footage and going through the id records of the men who were there? Why is this impossible? Grr....

I read a story online, not sure if it was true, about a bar where a woman told bar staff she thought something had been put in her drink.

The band stopped playing, the lights went up and the bar made an announcement that someone may have had her drink spiked, and that any woman who wanted her drink exchanged for a fresh one could do so free of charge.

I think that would be really effective, it would absolutely kill the mood but in a good way. Men would realise that spiking drinks, in that bar at least, would be a wasted effort.

Ideally CCTV should be reviewed and men charged with poisoning; not sure ID would be needed, as surely police can just use the bank details from his bar purchases to find out who he is?

Or bars could link their CCTV up to centralised control centres, and pay a security company to watch them.

The fact this has been going on for years with barely any convictions is just a lack of political will to do anything about it, really. It's always been illegal to poison someone!

The most common substance to spike with is alcohol. And it's sort of seen as acceptable / victims fault.

In general i think clubs and pubs need to have more standards/ duty of care or something.

I thought searching was pretty standard already maybe not though?
Bouncers and bar staff make known happy to be approached if anything odd and will help if can. If friends left call cab make sure get in. Keep an eye out for dodgy behaviour/ groups and get rid. If person unable to walk etc not leave on ground outside. Don't know what they should do with them tbh! But it doesn't seem ok to have someone pay in, cheap drinks all round, young woman being carted out by group of men when she is totally fucked. And just... Not their problem.

This sort of thing is better now at festivals and so on. Should be across the board.

I read something recently about the most common substance to spike with is alcohol. There was an 'experiment' or study or something done that showed that when men offered a woman a drink and accepted, the majority then became angry if she requested a non-alcaholic drink. I'm sure there was further stuff in the article I read as well about a certain % buying the woman the alcoholic drink she requested but it being a double etc but I can't remember where I read it now. It was possibly something grazia or Marie claire.

Often it's buying double/ triple/ large wine/ cheaper to get bottle etc etc.

Men who ask to buy you a drink get angry if you say no as well IME. Whole thing is minefield.

In strip clubs they will only take ID to let guy's and girls in. It should be like that in every venue. Let's be completely honest here and say that these guys who are doing it are rapists! It's so fucking disturbing to know that there are so many people out there doing this.

NiceGerbil · 30/10/2021 01:48

Why do they do that? Do you know?

MamsellMarie · 30/10/2021 06:05

Perhaps serving drinks in a small bottle, like beer comes in a bottle, maybe have a replaceable lid. No one fusses if you drink beer from a bottle, maybe an enterprising company could come up with attractive bottles.

I was at a festival recently and bought a lot a bottle of wine. No matter how much I said "but what if someone puts something in it?", they just wouldn't give me the lid. One of them argued something about licensing, the other said it was if I use it as a projectile then the liquid could flow out and it wouldn't be as heavy. Neither particularly cared if someone put something in my drink.

Yep. This plus high quality cctv.

They do that in strip clubs to protect profits and assets. Women being the assets. If your strippers are besten or have to spend their next shift in hospital OR if they are doing something illegal to make cash on the side then it can hurt your business and reduce profit.

The inertia about this problem is just another depressing data point that demonstrates women are second class citizens who don't matter.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 30/10/2021 09:01

My family went to a night club recently (it was 5pm and the closest place for a drink and to get out of the rain)

Everyones id was taken and scanned and i very nearly didnt get in as i dont carry id

This was london but i agree that all nightclubs should have to do it along with cctv and being more on the ball with ‘drunk’ women being taken out of the place by men

pinkmink · 30/10/2021 09:07

Does anyone wonder if there is some creepy incel community online somewhere that is swapping tips about spiking?

I recently finished Laura Bates Men who hate women. It’s made me think about the networks that enable and encourage this sort of behaviour.

AngelicInnocent · 31/10/2021 08:56

The pubs in the town near where i live will provide bottle stoppers with a hole in for a straw to any woman who asks for them. They also have glass covers for certain glasses. You have to ask for them upfront though.

My local has a policy of putting covers on glasses for women if the drink is ordered by a man u less she says otherwise.
