Sorry if someone else started a thread, but it's just turned up on twitter.

And all hail the magnificent Joanna Cherry! Flowers

I hope she’s smiling this morning.

wantmorenow · 28/10/2021 11:56

Great news.

KaycePollard · 28/10/2021 12:04

Fab news!

SpindleWorl · 28/10/2021 12:22

I just saw the Glinner email about it.

What a malicious prosecution it was. I hope Marion is able to claim compensation for losses incurred.

Thelnebriati · 28/10/2021 12:28

I'm not familiar with Scottish law, can anyone explain what 'discontinued' means and what the implications are?

Mollyollydolly · 28/10/2021 12:28

Fantastic news. All those months of stress though. Absolutely shocking she's gone through this because of malicious complaints.

Abhannmor · 28/10/2021 12:33

Brilliant. So glad for her. Isn't there an offence called Vexatious litigation or some such? Something must be done about these malicious cranks.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/10/2021 12:42

There's an interesting post on this thread re the choice of lawyers

Marion Millar case discontinued!!!!!! www.mumsnet.com/Talk/feminism/4386802-Marion-Millar-case-discontinued

KohlaParasaurus · 28/10/2021 12:57

Also angry that this ridiculous case was even allowed to get off the ground, but pleased that it has been discontinued. I wish Marion lots of strength as she reclaims her life Flowers

TambourineofRighteousness · 28/10/2021 13:36

Woo! Glitterball Glitterball Glitterball Also, didn't know we had a glitterball emoji.

Stealhsquirrelnutkin · 28/10/2021 14:06

So glad to hear this excellent news, what a huge relief it must be for Marion.

At the same time I am absolutely fuming that the judicial system allowed itself to be used and manipulated in such an obviously malicious and groundless manner.

First I thought about the woman's meeting in Leeds, when the police were waiting and arrested women who had travelled there from across the country to speak out about the threat that self ID posed to women and children. The police man in charge had obviously decided that uppity women would not be allowed to speak on his patch (where women in Holbeck are supposed to use their mouths to serve men, not to challenge them). All the women wrongfully arrested and held in police cells across Leeds were released once the meeting had dispersed, and no charges were brought.

Then I thought of the horrible case were a straight woman got the police and court system to prosecute Miranda Yardley. Miranda went through hell in the run up to the trial, and had to spend a lot of money on a legal defence team. The woman behind the accusations, a Mermaids stalwart and influencer, tried to get the judge to grant her full anonymity, and was incoherent in her accusations. The judge castigated all concerned in allowing the baseless case to come to trial, but Miranda still had to live with the scars of being put through that Kafkaesque process.

Kate Scottow was taken away from her traumatised children and left in a police cell for hours without sanitary protection after being accused of being rude to a horrible man on twitter. She was originally found guilty of the crime of telling the truth without sugar coating it, and had to take her case to appeal to clear her name and regain her reputation.

Maya lost her job and was publicly shamed by a tribunal judge who decreed that her belief in the immutability of biological sex was 'not worthy of respect in democratic society'. She had to take her case to a higher court in order for that biased and incorrect judgement to be overturned.

Now Ceri in Northern Ireland is being tormented, at the instigation of the same spiteful man who persuaded the Scottish police to persecute Marion.

Decent people are being forced to divert funds that could be used to support women's groups, the LGB alliance and the Lesbian and Gay News media website, to help protect innocent people being targeted by malicious people using the police and prosecution system as their enforcers.

Instead of fighting to fundraise for each individual case we need some kind of fighting fund that is available for anyone being targeted by these spiteful monsters. That way, when a case gets dropped, the money raised would go back into the pot and be available. And once all the battles have been won, and the police and legal system has been set free from the institutional capture currently manipulating them, the fund could be used to support women's legal rights in other ways.

Meanwhile, I really want there to be consequences for those who raise malicious accusations and use the police to bully people who refuse to bow to their oppressive demands and over entitled expectations.

FannyCann · 28/10/2021 14:13

Great post @Stealhsquirrelnutkin , agree on all points.

Also, didn't know we had a glitterball emoji.

That is a matter of debate Tambourine
I thought they were grenades but some on Mumsnet identified them as celeriac. Grin

Signalbox · 28/10/2021 15:12

In this case, if they did ask for a review it is unlikely the decision will be overturned. COPFS would not have dropped the case lightly. Unless they were sure there was no basis for it. And it would have had approval already at a very high level.

Begs the question why COPFS approved it in the first place? Something must’ve happened or changed.

nauticant · 28/10/2021 15:17

Here's my tinfoil hat theory from the other thread:

I do wonder whether the decision came from upstairs to protect the Scottish Government's new hate crime legislation which currently appears to be in limbo. I realise that Marion Millar was going to be prosecuted under the older legislation but a hugely embarrassing and very public court case in which the state is shown to be oppressively using its powers as it's trying to get hold of stronger powers would have been a PR disaster.

Thelnebriati · 28/10/2021 15:27

Actually, that doesn't sound tin foil hat. I just hope its a bit late because a lot of people already think they overstepped the mark.

dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 28/10/2021 15:33

@YetAnotherSpartacus

Was Marion financially hurt in any way? I remember reading that she may have to lose her house? Does she have recourse to compensation?
I expect so, along with everyone who crowdfunded her. The psychological stress for her must have been horrendous and I am so relieved for her and all others who believe in free speech in Scotland/UK. We still have to self-censor though....the cat and mouse parallel also a concern. Why did it take so long for 'sensible' prosecutors to chuck it out....what was driving this delay?
CreepingDeath · 28/10/2021 15:41

I'm so relieved for Marion, I did wonder because a few days ago I checked her webpage and it seemed like it had been taken down as it says account suspended.

I do hope she goes ahead with a complaint against the Scottish police service, or is able to sue for malicious prosecution or something. They should never have been allowed to take it this far.

dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 28/10/2021 15:43

@MoltenLasagne

Fantastic news but still appalling that it was ever brought in the first place.

From a freedom of speech point of view though I think it is still unclear exactly what you can and cannot say in Scotland. It is quite concerning.

Agree on all points. There's a clear pattern of using the justice system to try to silence women, and it is totally one-way.
MassiveHoard · 28/10/2021 21:33

I have no legal background, just wondering if anyone knows if/how it would be possible to seek legal redress for the pattern of malicious prosecutions.

Is it really the same person?! Shock
