Going to dump this here and disappear, as it's bedtime, but I thought you'd like to see it (hopefully the share token will work)! Grin www.thetimes.co.uk/article/8d125c16-342b-11ec-a1f1-3deca2439cf5?shareToken=d69228d470a58a6c9140d6a3e2560c53

Ofcom and Channel 4 have quit the diversity champions scheme, with the media watchdog saying that it “risked a perceived conflict of interest”.

I’m glad they’ve left but a bit embarrassing that Ofcom didn’t think about this before joining.

Good piece though, I think Rosamund Urwin has written on this before.

OperationDessertStorm · 24/10/2021 01:50

Also I just find it so shocking that someone used to dealing with all the troubles and complexity in Northern Ireland has been warned off dealing with this!

Whenever we’ve had workplace training it’s been hammered home that it’s our side being dangerous and bigoted

"A BBC insider claimed that executives were “desperate” to quit the scheme, but faced opposition from other senior figures at the corporation."

Wow. so senior figures just like senior politicians have just been waiting for a signal that it's ok to make a move without obliterating their careers. Home office. BBC. How many senior people across the country thinking this are there? I'm assuming that every single public body has senior people wanting to leave Stonewall.... the list of membership cancellations will continue.

Vanishun · 24/10/2021 07:05

Interesting that they've tried to attack him in any weird way they can, including his pay.

Hoardasurass · 24/10/2021 09:18

When you have no answer to substantive accusations the only thing you can do is to attack the speaker

JingleCatJingle · 24/10/2021 09:27

As someone who lives in NI I was saddened that Nolan was investigating Stonewall and it makes me even more conflicted about being GC.
Nolan is not a good influence on the politics here. He gives airtime to almost comedic voices of extreme unionism, some of whom do not even have an electoral mandate. He riles people up and forces posturing on both sides.

Thank you so much! I’ve been hoping transcripts would become available.

Ben Hunte, the BBC’s former LGBT correspondent, appeared on a Stonewall video on TikTok, raising questions about impartiality.

Well, that's a bit fecking rich!

BraveBananaBadge · 24/10/2021 09:52

Oops. Misread. Thought it meant Hunte was asking questions about impartiality. That'd be the day.

Thanks for the share OP

Fortunately he's not doing anything like that in this podcast although he does point out that if even Ben Cohen can't say what two spirit or genderqueer mean, perhaps they're absolutely nonsensical terms. I'm only on episode 3 though

He and DT have certainly ruffled feathers.

To be fair, that was a very poorly worded sentence.
Cleebope2 · 24/10/2021 11:21

I agree that Nolan is divisive in NI but he is also ferocious at getting to the truth and fearless, and more power to him for taking this on. No one else would do this and he gains much respect from me for leading the way here.

borntobequiet · 24/10/2021 11:27

I expect being divisive is unavoidable in such a divided society. His way of working seems to be to make people clearly state their beliefs, articulate and defend them.

prudencepuffin · 24/10/2021 12:26

And regardless of Nolan`s position in NI, this is a podcast which absolutely needed to be made and has shone light for so many people.

Lovelyricepudding · 24/10/2021 12:49

JingleCatJingle have you listened to the podcasts?

I think it is a shame that it is a NI presenter podcast rather than a more widely known London presenter doing a series of prime time TV slots....

JingleCatJingle · 24/10/2021 12:54

I haven’t had time to listen to them to be honest, I will try to read the transcripts, but I dislike how he works as a broadcaster and how he platforms people who do not have an electoral mandate here, like Jamie Bryson.
@borntobequiet he goes out of his way to make things worse here for listening figures. Understandable but not pleasant.

As an aside, two-spirit is a term that’s actively used by the native people in North America. Not sure why they’re attempting to use it in the UK where that culture is unlikely to be that active. No wonder Ben Cohen is at a loss.

Stealhsquirrelnutkin · 24/10/2021 15:04

I'd never heard of Stephen Nolan or David Thompson before the podcasts hit the news, but I'm very glad they had the balls to investigate, despite (or perhaps partially because) of the dire warnings.

If the "nicer" BBC investigative journalists decided not to risk their reputations and careers by poking the hornets nest, then I'm very grateful to Nolan and Thompson for stepping in where angels fear to tread.

More power to them. I can think of loads of unsavoury blokes who earn even higher salaries that are completely useless. I hope their bravery is recognised and rewarded when the next load of investigative journalism awards are being handed out.

Yes someone else should have done this. Long ago. Everyone else is a fucking pussy though.

Surely the use of Two Spirit is cultural appropriation?

Two spirit is an actively contested and problematic term. I was reading a piece by an indigenous woman on Twitter the other day about it (which annoyingly I can't find now).
