Using mental health as a defence

I’ve just read a news article about Michael Slater (ex Australian cricketer) being charged for a DV related offence of “Use a carriage service (usually a phone) to stalk, harass or intimidate a person”. The person in question is the ex-girlfriend. Now his solicitor has announced that the cricketer has been having mental health issues & is now seeking treatment.

I’m absolutely not surprised, this type of legal strategy is often trotted out when these types of incidents occur.

Of course I don’t know for sure if it is true, however, it seems awfully convenient. It makes a mockery of people who actually do struggle with these issues.

I can see where it is heading already. He will say how sorry he is & he wants to get better. Another win for the patriarchy.

It's standard. Ditto addiction. Stress. Money worries. Etc.

Eg all the male Hollywood types who do something awful. Have something treated MH booze etc.

Being transgender seems to be an excellent reason to not get sentenced/get minimal sentencing.
