No mention of girls on all girls school website

Argh just spent about 20 minutes trying to work out if a school is mixed or girls. I'm fairly new to the area and researching secondary schools and someone briefly said look at this one so I went on the website and although I can see lots of pictures of girls I can't see any mention of the word girls, the whole website only describes 'students'. I can only really go on other web searches rather than use their own website to decide if it is an all girls school.

Can't understand why saying it's an all girls school isn't a key part of a single sex girls school on their website. Maybe I'm just in a bad mood today but it doesn't make sense to me.

Have you had a look at their admissions criteria?

Holly60 · 19/10/2021 14:16

To be fair most schools refer to ‘students’ rather than ‘girls and boys’. I think you are making something out of a mole hill to be honest.

Holly60 · 19/10/2021 14:17

Also if you look up ofsted report (I bet you did/will) it will tell you there

WholeClassKeptIn · 19/10/2021 14:18

My daughter is at a girls school. She says the staff aren't allowed to refer to them as "girls" collectively anymore...

It should have the information on the Get Information about Schools service
www.get-information-schools.service.gov.uk/

@Holly60 fair enough. I'm quite surprised I think it's as if it's a bad thing to mention girls so let's put 'students' instead.

And no, it doesn't make any sense to me either. I've just checked the website of the school my DD went to, it still (I'm glad to say) uses a sensible mix of terms - girls, young women, 'female leaders' as well as students and pupils.

puffylittlefluffball · 19/10/2021 14:24

Thanks for that @Councilworker it does say on that website that the gender of entry is girls

@JurassickJay

But can they say, 'gurrells,' in a Miss Jean Brodie accent?
That's how I hear it, thanks to my old headmistress.
puffylittlefluffball · 19/10/2021 14:35

@ErrolTheDragon same for my dd current all girls school.

I just went on the website of the all girls school I went and no mention of girls there either I do think it's a shame.

Maybe you should contact them and ask about it. Single sex education can be really good for girls, but not if the very word is considered taboo and shameful. The school might want to add 'inclusive' terms, but avoiding 'girl' is not inclusive.

it does say on that website that the gender of entry is girls

That could land them in trouble. Afaik there is provision in law for single sex schools. But not for single 'gender' (whatever that might mean). If they admit a male gender-nonconforming child then they could be opening up a can of worms as they would have made the school mixed sex - in which case it would then be discriminatory to exclude other male children.

NothingTraLaLa · 19/10/2021 14:46

Are they single-sex all the way through? Round here all the single-sex schools have mixed sixth forms, so refer to pupils/students rather than girls on their websites.

puffylittlefluffball · 19/10/2021 14:55

@NothingTraLaLa I can't actually tell from their website. There are only picture of younger secondary age girls on it. They do have a sixth form but no mention of whether it is mixed or not again only the word students.

The website above that @Councilworker gave above also just says gender of entry girls, so I think they don't.

Just checked their admissions criteria and it only says 'children' on those pages.

"Gender of entry"?

Oh dear.

Knittyknittybangbang · 19/10/2021 19:35

That's poor, and confusing. I've just checked my Ds's school. And it says boys and single-sex repeatedly on the admissions information on their website. Crystal clear.
