Great Daily Mail article re: Prof.Stock

Campus security were on hand but not intervening (we left fairly early though). I think the protestors were carefully staying on the right side of the "peaceful protest" line, the chants were "Stock out" rather than abuse.

EerilyDisembodied · 16/10/2021 20:08

To be honest, if you didn't know the background, it might not have felt particularly intimidating, although you couldn't miss it. However if you are fully acquainted with what's happening it seemed pretty hostile.

PersonalTinsel · 16/10/2021 20:11

I was there today taking my DD for the open day. There were about 50 masked students chanting ‘Stock out’ ‘Don’t Come to Sussex, Sussex supports Transphobia’ and leafleting. It was pretty intimidating and offputting for DD on an otherwise fantastically well organised and inspiring open day. I’d love to know what Sussex are doing about it.

AlfonsoTheDinosaur · 16/10/2021 20:11

I suspect that Rio and et al are pro Freedom of Screech, not Freedom of Speech.

QueenSue · 16/10/2021 20:13

The bit that stood out for me there was the student officer saying that students felt ‘intellectually threatened’ by her.
Haha, that why would they admit that, it really makes them look bad.

QueenSue · 16/10/2021 20:14

"Help! This woman is more intelligent than us!"

NutellaEllaElla · 16/10/2021 20:25

That is a brilliant article, going so far as to bullet point what Stock actually says.

And I LOVE the self own of the truly stupid person who admitted their intellectual inferiority. No wonder they don't want to be within ten miles of the woman. They have every right to feel intellectually threatened by her, she is many leagues above them!

Thanks for the laugh op.

BingBongSong · 16/10/2021 20:33

Maybe I'm a bit too old, but do you not go to university in order to be intellectually challenged?

GreyhoundG1rl · 16/10/2021 20:37

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel

The bit that stood out for me there was the student officer saying that students felt ‘intellectually threatened’ by her. If I said someone made me feel intellectually threatened I would mean I was afraid I was not as intelligent as them and that I feared my beliefs would not stand up to their arguments. It’s not something I would want publicly known. What does this person think it means??!
The mind boggles! Dozy little twit.
teawamutu · 16/10/2021 20:38

@QueenSue

"Help! This woman is more intelligent than us!"
M/TRA philosophy in a nutshell.
Scraggythang · 16/10/2021 22:26

Ugh. It’s so depressing. Do they realise how thick they sound? I didn’t go to university, but I worked my way up to owning my own business and I’ve been challenged and felt ‘unsafe’ on numerous occasions. I’m only one generation above this lot and I’m seriously concerned about their worldview.

BaronMunchausen · 16/10/2021 22:47

Intellectually threatened is a good one. I think they possibly meant to elaborate on the 'feeling unsafe' as being conceptual rather than physical. A bit like gender identity.

FlyingOink · 16/10/2021 23:00

If the protest being held during an open day was intended to put off prospective students, does that mean the protesters are aiming to bankrupt the university? Or that they don't care about any financial damage? Or that they don't mind if their own education is affected?

It seems really counterintuitive to protest to prospective students and their parents rather than focusing on the administration. Is it some kind of brinkmanship? "Sack her or we will keep losing you money"?

Is the university even in a position to sack her? She has broken no laws, she is covered by employment law even if her ex-union is hostile, and the potential financial loss to the university might be higher in sacking her than it would be in ignoring these protests.

Strikes me that these protesters are performative, and that this masked nonsense is more about maintaining social status in their peer group than anything else.

FlyingOink · 16/10/2021 23:01

The masks really make me think of a petition signed using pseudonyms.

What really is the point?

Crackletranton · 16/10/2021 23:02

Hearing that they've protested during an Open Day just makes me think they're a bit thick really. We're not looking at universities until next year but if I saw this I'd certainly wonder about admissions criteria.

GCAcademic · 16/10/2021 23:04

@BingBongSong

Don’t be daft. You go to university to instruct your lecturers in how to think.
Scraggythang · 16/10/2021 23:07

@Crackletranton unfortunately, from what I hear you’ll find twits like this at most, if not all universities. Whether they choose to advertise it on an open day or not.

PickAChew · 16/10/2021 23:09

"intellectually threatened" =someone dares to not agree with me. Literal violence.

What did your daughter feel ?
PersonalTinsel · 17/10/2021 02:53

@littlbrowndog she found it upsetting, especially the cult like chanting & masks. We talked about it a lot later (and have ordered KS book now) and it won’t put her off applying.

EerilyDisembodied · 17/10/2021 05:55

My DC found it upsetting too, we had discussed it the week before as I anticipated something similar might happen but it was still quite shocking.
