Charity Mermaids annual accounts

OneEpisode · 16/10/2021 10:42

Mermaids have put their accounts to March 2021 on register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk/charity-search/-/charity-details/5054976/accounts-and-annual-returns
The accounts are formatted very differently from last time, and now refer to “Trans* YP” (I think they said children before)
Donations are up massively, more than a £1m, and lots more trustees.

Spot the gravy train.

It looks like one thing being a big help to build up their cash balance is the £100,000 from Starbucks and the £125,000 from the National Lottery.

Oblomov21 · 03/11/2021 09:53

Certainly growing.

oldwomanwhoruns · 03/11/2021 11:59

The national f***g lottery is giving OUR money to mermaids??????!!!

And that's the last time I go into a Starbucks. Ever.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 03/11/2021 12:05

Mermaids got a grant from big lottery 3 years ago I think - it’ll be time limited & will run out soon

I’m staggered that ppl think giving money to an organisation that promotes the idea that children can be mysteriously born in the wrong body and therefore need a lifetime of treatment is a good idea….

I bet the corporates fall away in the next financial year though

Rhannion · 03/11/2021 12:06

BBC Children in Need also gives/ gave money to Mermaids and I think Comic Relief do as well.

Other reasons to boycott Starbucks include their slave labour ‘problem’ fairworldproject.org/starbucks-has-a-slave-labor-problem/ And their financial manoeuvring to avoid paying tax in the UK

I feel very strongly about events such as Children in Need/Comic Relief/ Sports Relief and other such fund raisers that donate funds to such organisations. I have over the years become more questioning in the charity donations that I make or am willing to engage with - I do not want my donations to go to organisations that I do not support.

Same here. I no longer donate to these. I donate to specific charities directly.

Never been so thankful that I think Starbucks coffee tastes like washing up water. It will be easy to avoid.

I stopped donating when I read about this. So did DP.

We have donated to other local charities instead, and to specific crowdfunders. The ones that know what a woman is, and what a girl is, and who understand why it's really important to know that when tackling systemtic abuse.

Likewise. Sadly, the number of essential crowdfunders on key issues won't be reducing any time soon.

Yep. Any BBC run charity will be subject to Stonewall rules, and any charity receiving funds will also have to adhere to the Stonewall diversity standards and tick box exercising proving they are administering equality under Stonewall's definition of the concept. Children in Need have teamed up with Girlguiding UK to fundraise for the second year running. Small wonder that, in the same time frame, GGUK were revealed to have a £4m deficit and having to make redundancies, did a survey about inclusion with a tiny sample of GG members, decided everyone in Girlguiding is a racist, homophobic, exclusionary bigot, appointed a load of additional inclusion officers, and is promoting gender ideology via things like ACE awareness week and badge activities sponsored by Stonewall.

Starbucks, because of its association with Mermaids, is now forever linked in my mind with unneccessary mastectomies. Every time I see their logo I have a visceral reaction of revulsion, like I would to rotting food.

Soontobe60 · 03/11/2021 17:22

I’m waiting to see the sad film reels on COMIC / SPORT RELIEF night or Children in Need of 10 yr old boys and their mums crying because they want puberty blockers or else they’ll literally die… that’ll bring in the donations!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/11/2021 18:04

I've been boycotting Starbucks for a long time because of their tax evasion, so they won't miss my money. Never contributed to CiN or similar because I have my doubts about where the money ends up. Direct donations are the way to go.

When did that gamer do his stunt raising money for Mermaids? It was allegedly an eyewatering amount. Would that be in these accounts?

SaltySheepdog · 03/11/2021 19:00

I stopped using Starbucks and the lottery a while ago due to them funding mermaids

Rhannion · 03/11/2021 19:04

Surely the BBC won’t have to toe the line now they are out of Stonewall?

TedImgoingmad · 03/11/2021 19:08

Doesn't mean the personnel who pushed for Stonewall and the culture of the BBC has changed, or their policies necessarily. That will take time.

Yes. Sadly after years of supporting both I have had to stop. I won't be responsible for helping to fund these actions with children. The BBC is also going to be in a rather sticky position hosting active fund raising for these now very controversial causes.
littlbrowndog · 03/11/2021 19:12

See when I saw the lgbt flag thing on the dreamies. I was 😖😖😖

But they said no money was given to whoever.

It’s like crack for the cat

Which begs the question, why are on earth Dreamies are giving money to any human charity and not a cat one?
PickAChew · 03/11/2021 23:21

I've been sceptical about CiN forever. When I was still a teen, in the late 80s, I stayed over with a boyfriend and they had another house guest. To my young self, she was impressive but a little odd. She ran a charity - laudable. She made her child choose between jam and butter for his toast because both was too extravagant. She also tried to impose those values on the rest of us. Fuck that.

Several years later, her charity was all over the news for being a bit of a scam.

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 04/11/2021 07:33

Staebucks actively help to provide funds to transition their American employees, they offer comprehensive med insurance to cover the costs of transition surgeries:

www.gaytimes.co.uk/life/starbucks-to-pay-for-surgeries-for-its-transgender-employees/

stories.starbucks.com/stories/2018/they-are-lifesaving-starbucks-offers-expanded-benefits-for-trans-people/

TTExulansic mentions Starbucks with this vidio on the problems created by bottom surgery on Tic Toc star transitioner Gruffin, I think it' s become a bit of a cliche for transgender employees to work at Starbucks.
