Scotland: Transvaginal Mesh Removal Bill - Call for views ends 13 October 2021

The Transvaginal Mesh Removal Bill seeks to refund individuals who paid for private surgery to remove transvaginal mesh from their body. It is to include the costs of removal surgery and reasonable connected expenses.

The call for views will close on 13 October 2021.

The Committee is keen to hear views on the Bill and on the following questions:

  • Do you support the aims of the Bill?

  • Would you like to see any changes to the Bill? If so, what?

  • Can you see any issues with implementation of the Bill or the way the costs will be reimbursed?

  • Does the Bill adequately address how reimbursement will be administered? Does it take account of how finance to pay for treatment was raised (for example, via ‘crowdfunding’)?

  • Do you think that the costs as set in the Financial Memorandum are a reasonable estimate?

  • Do you have any other comments on the provisions set out in the Bill?

Individuals who have been affected by transvaginal mesh in Scotland will be able to provide additional, confidential information to the Committee if they wish to do so.

(I see they use the word individuals rather than women now....)

Well as you needed a womb to be affected by this, why use the word women eh? Hmm

It’s horrific and I hope it is passed. They should be due compensation also, so many of these poor women’s lives have been ruined by this procedure. It was unacceptable that it was okayed in the first place. Only effected those pesky womb individuals though I guess, so no biggy.

Thank you.

The scottish mesh campaigners are amazing. They just sorted shit out. Didn't take no as an answer and got on with it.

Remarkable.

Hello, could someone post this on Gransnet please? I would but I don't know how to do this. Thank you.

You’re welcome. Fine Scottish women at their best, well done to them!

I think more people should be aware of this, and be rightly outraged. I read about it a few years ago and couldn’t believe it was accepted as a valid procedure given the failure rate and the horrific consequences of it going wrong. It struck me as a purely cost cutting exercise at the expense of women’s health. Something the NHS seems very good at when it’s only half of society involved imo.
Just look at the shocking state of maternity services (or lack of) in this country.
