... A statue of Betty Campbell, who sounds like a fascinating woman.

Nice to read about her life and work, and see an interesting and carefully thought through statue/sculpture.

And good that Wales finally has a statue of a woman!

I can't believe that Wales didn't have a statue of a woman!!! Shock

Cailleach1 · 01/10/2021 10:16

That is really good statue. Strength and guidance. Solid.

Saw this on the news last night, it’s a really wonderful statue, and she really was a remarkable woman. Not much to feel good about on the news but this story brought a smile to mine and DHs faces.

That's a beauty. Lovely tribute to Betty.

First statue of a named woman.

Yes. Personally, I think a statue is of a named, known, person. An anonymous 'woman' is a sculpture more than a statue.

Up until recently there were only slightly fewer statues of men named 'John' than there were of women (in the UK).

It's great that Betty Campbell has been commemorated and that the work of the campaigners is continuing to ensure all the women on the shortlist have a statue. There are other statues of women in Wales, but they usually represent concepts or myths rather than people - or they are made of willow or wood (e.g Jemima Nicholas in Pembrokeshire). I think fewer statues of named men have been unveiled in Wales (maybe in the rest of the UK too?) in recent decades anyway. I don't think it was something that sat easily with Welsh religious non-conformist values.

I wonder how many of the named women statues in England are of queens, and that is why Wales has none.

Nevertheless it is long overdue. And what a superb woman to honour in this way.
