Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Soooo the 2021 Conservative conference kicks off 3-6 October. Will the Tory MPs answer the questions re. Gender identity more decisively?

I fully expect the same questions to be asked of Tory MPs as this has been such a huge talking point over the Labour Conference. Are they going to answer those questions more decisively or are they too going to dance around the issue for fear of getting their heads shot off?

They will dance.

They've no idea how much I would admire them if they took a half-day to be briefed about anatomy, physiology, and how to deal with nonsensical assertions.

I would double that admiration if they challenged so many of the zombie claims and myths (e.g., puberty blockers being a 'pause', the suicide stats, the 'most oppressed' narrative).

My admiration would increase exponentially if they would expose these mythomanes* for who they are and the poisoned narratives they spread as truths.

If they answer a question about women, by actually talking about women not trans identified men that would be a start.

Floisme · 29/09/2021 12:57

I expect there's some intensive government lobbying going on as we speak (even though it's only a matter of time before someone drops in to tell us we're all allied with the far right). I'm expecting straightforward answers from some - and that they won't be chastised or require extra security for doing so - but evasion and waffle from the top.

PronounssheRa · 29/09/2021 13:01

Well it seems that women can meet at the tory fringe to discuss women's rights, no need to organise a separate meeting or hire private security.

It's a start ( from a low bar, granted)

JustcameoutGC · 29/09/2021 13:05

If there was a closer contest, I could see the tories really pushing on this. It is pretty easy to construct a position that protects the rights of trans people AND women. There are some very sensible and workable solutions in here, that could be readily explained and defended and don't involve the need to insist that women have penises and men can have a cervix. They just need to bite the bullet and face down the TRAs

However, as Labour is a slow mo car crash, they have no need to take this risk, so we will probably get equally obfuscated bollocks.

You have one job Labour, to offer a credible opposition. You have THE WORST government ever, and you are spinning in the wind.

OvaHere · 29/09/2021 13:12

I think overall they will be a bit better but some of them will also come out with nonsense.

Boris is a wild card. I assume he will also sit in the Marr hot seat ahead of conference and it's a chance for once in his life to not lie or waffle. I wouldn't bet the farm on it though.

Beowulfa · 29/09/2021 13:23

I was just about to start a thread on the same topic.

Now you can accuse the Conservatives of many things, but they do seem to employ people who are generally sharper at reading the room, and are better at keeping their lunatic fringe in check.

Johnson's team MUST know he's likely to be asked something about transphobia and who has a cervix. If he answers something like Cripes, Andrew, of course I know that women have a cervix! My wife's having a baby (and did I mention we have a cute dog?). However, I also know that some women prefer to identify as men, and have specific health and welfare needs that need acknowledging then the Tories will probably still be in power as the Earth spirals into the Sun in its red giant death throes.

FreeBritnee · 29/09/2021 13:29

I’m going to be so interested in what they say to these questions. Labour has come across as so weak on this issue. Embarrassingly so. Im fascinated whether any of them have the balls speak clearly on this issue and make me feel sane again.

OP posts:
PronounssheRa · 29/09/2021 13:31

The only reason Labour MPs are being asked this question is because the accusations of transphobia levelled at Rosie, and her decision not to attend conference. The subsequent nonsense that Labour MPs have been saying since Monday just adds fuel, because journalists are hitting gold everytime the question is asked

The tories could deal with this easily if their advisers have slightly more about them then the Labour advisors do

ARoombaOfOnesOwn · 29/09/2021 13:43

Didn’t his ex-wife have cervical cancer? I really don’t think he could say not just women have cervices, I would really really hope not anyway.

OvaHere · 29/09/2021 13:50

I do think the Tories have some questions to be asked of them and answered. They've backtracked somewhat recently mostly thanks to Liz "women do have vaginas, Nick" Truss but a lot of this has flourished on their watch and continues to do so in areas under their remit.

Caroline Ffiske raises some of those questions in an article today.

NapoleonOzmolysis · 29/09/2021 14:21

I mean, I'm not sure anyone could outdo Labour's mess on women's rights but then I probably thought that two weeks ago about the Lib dems too.

Marguerite2000 · 29/09/2021 14:21

They refused to recognise non binary as a legal status recently, so I think they'll come through here. It doesn't matter if they piss off the 'woke' sector (who already hate them anyway) because they don't need their vote.

KohlaParasanda · 29/09/2021 22:14

I can't believe I'm hoping that the Conservative party will speak up in support of women's rights so that I will have a party, any party, I feel I might be able to vote for. My granny, a lifelong working class Tory and one of the first women to have the vote, will be chortling in her grave. My children will be horrified that I'm even considering voting Conservative. But every other party has thrown women off a cliff without a hint of shame.

Konyeshno · 29/09/2021 22:22

I'd bet my last quid they'll not get asked. Labour and the Lib Dems proactively made arses of themselves on this, which is why interviewers picked at the wound. They'll give the tories a very easy ride half arsed grilling on fuel and COVID.

This looks like good news: mobile.twitter.com/ALLIANCELGB/status/1443312204200169478

Text of tweet:

LGB Alliance co-founder Kate Harris: “It’s been two years in the making and we are thrilled to have a stand. We want to publicise our cause. We were set up to stand up for respectful freedom of speech.”

“We’ve seen slight controversy at the Labour Party conference this year…. as politicians contort themselves into ridiculous positions to defend idiotic ideas. We are hoping to speak to as many people as possible to say there is a plurality of opinion on LGB rights.”

OvaHere · 29/09/2021 22:46

This is going to give out conflicting messages. I'm far less confident now (and I wasn't very in the first place) of getting a sensible answer from him if asked.

  • From Boris that is
Helleofabore · 29/09/2021 23:45

Well, Jackie Doyle Price isn’t the only one speaking about these issues with clarity. Maybe though they will leave the interviews to her and to Liz. Although Sajid Javid seems to be up for answering too.

Imnobody4 · 30/09/2021 00:44

At 2018 conference Sue Pascoe gave speech from the main stage.
www.lgbtconservatives.org.uk/news/sue-pascoes-speech-conference
It will be interesting to see how Crispin Blunt et al behave this year.

I'm sure the Tories will make much of freedom of speech and being a broad church. They have a Women and children first meeting as well as LBGT.
Boris will be we must have trans rights and women rights on the cake and eat it principle.

DdraigGoch · 30/09/2021 01:03

Sajid Javid was pretty open about knowing a particular biological fact so I doubt he'll be skirting around the issue. Liz Truss has been great on the issue.

Mollyollydolly · 30/09/2021 01:17

The Tories are politically savvy.

Most of this shit show has happened while they've been in power.

There are many questions to be asked of them, however by rolling back from self id they've been smart.

I would love them to be asked about Stonewall law and how it's captured so many institutions but it's probably too complex and nuanced for your average viewer/listener.

Labour, the Lib Dems and the Greens have done a remarkable job of making it look like it's their fault when it's happened under the tories. The lack of political nouse of opposition parties is mind blowing.

Helleofabore · 30/09/2021 07:51

I think it is probably more important to see whether the Tory executive attempts to heavily control their politicians opinions or not.

If they have learned anything, it would be that it doesn’t work. You instead encourage journalists to focus on the bonkers statements being put out.

I only hope that the Tories actually have a better line than ‘most marginalised’ and unfounded suicide statistics.
