Trying to find links to an old event - walkout at conference

I'm trying to find an old news story, but for the life of me, I can't find links with keywords in Google or on MN.

I have a vague recollection that pre-pandemic, there was a particularly bizarre news story concerning a conference attended by female academics, somewhere in the UK.

A GC woman dared to ask a question to the panel. I think it was safeguarding-related and rather than debate it, all of the delegates in the hall walked-out, congregating in the lobby, leaving the woman 'owning' the conference hall. Apparently the question was deemed 'transphobic' and the delegates didn't fancy answering or debating the question.

And...that's as much as I remember.

DH is writing a future noir detective thriller screenplay in a society where a leftist regime has imposed racial segregation. He has a scene which is a variation on the above. Except he didn't know of the event, and I don't recollect enough of it to speak sensibly about it. Can anyone shed more light on things. Did it actually happen, or am I imagining it?

Hmm can't remember all the details, I'm googling. I think Julia Long asked the question and I think Jane Claire Jones was there and mentioned it. If you scroll far enough back on JCJ's twitter feed you might find it?? Could have been at least 2 or 3 years ago though.

Right, maybe this thread would help? In my reply to it (which I didn't remember at all) I also refer to another Julia Long comment at a different event.

Oh, we're getting there. I had a feeling Lola Olufemi (person who huffed about Selina Todd at Oxford event) was involved, and I was right, but that wasn't enough on its own.

Your Jane Clare Jones clue helped. Mentioned here, after the Oxford thing:

Ah, got to watch out for this thing submitting itself. One day I'm going to post a really embarrassing draft...

I don't think JCJ ever did get to ever writing anything about it though, until the Oxford tweets.

Thank you for the replies.

The Feminist & Woman's Studies Association Conference from 2019 sounds like the event I was thinking of. Lucky222 provided a summary of it in the thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3719651-Quote-noted-transphobe-attempted-to-disrupt-one-of-the-panels-at-FWSA-UK-Conference which Permanent noted above.

Darned if I could find the references with a search!

Julia Long & Sheila Jeffreys caused uproar & a mass walk out at the Feminist & Woman's Studies Association Conference for Julia making a comment whilst in the audience 😂 (unknown what that was.) There's all sorts of outraged snowflakes spluttering about it under twitter hashtag #FeministHope.

I'm presenting this to DH for his script this evening.

The Feminist & Woman's Studies Association got rid of that pesky 'woman's' term in 2020, switching to the 'Feminist Studies Association'.

It also appears to have tried to forget all about its 2019 conference altogether the-fsa.co.uk/prizes-and-initiatives/past-initiatives-and-events/conferences-and-events/
