It's excellent. It's laying out Helen Joyce's argument that she's not interested in trans people per se, her interest lies in the impacts of the ideology on public policy etc.

Thanks OP, will check this out. Have seen all of them speak at different times on the Benjamin Boyce podcast and they are brilliant.

This is such a good podcast, all the episodes are good but this one with Helen Joyce and the previous one on social transitioning are really excellent.

Episode 41: The New York Times describes Helen Joyce’s book, Trans: When Ideology Meets Reality, as “an intelligent, thorough rejoinder to an idea that has swept across much of the liberal world seemingly overnight”. Joyce reminds us that her book is not about trans people, but rather, it is about the idea “that people should count as men or women according to how they feel and what they declare, instead of their biology”. Helen explains the ways it’s more acceptable for men to “give up some privilege” and strategies women in other cultures have used to opt out of unfavourable circumstances. Perhaps denying sex leads to a perfectly clear demonstration of just how different men and women can be. We also reflect on the differences between American’s tendency to double-down on bad policy and the hopefulness Helen feels with the unfolding UK reckoning with gender self-id. In this episode we discuss the many ramifications of “you are exactly who you say you are.”

I've listened to quite a few podcasts featuring Helen now, and she's so blindingly knowledgeable, clear and fair in her points, its really illuminating. This was an especially strong one. My hope is that she narrates the 'Trans' audiobook.

Agreed, it was very fine. Episode 40 Social Transition: A Powerful Psychosocial Intervention

Social transition is often the first recommended intervention when a young person begins questioning his or her gender identity. It entails changing one’s name, pronouns, appearance, and other identity markers to match the desired gender. In very recent years, schools, led by the current gender identity affirmative approach, have taken it upon themselves to support and sometimes encourage students with social transition. Families often feel pressured by professionals to make these powerful changes despite little evidence supporting these interventions. At times, living in another identity can create more problems than it resolves. In this episode Sasha and Stella do a deep dive into the many challenges that arise with social transition.

My hope is that she narrates the 'Trans' audiobook.

She tweeted a couple of weeks ago that she is.

Helen is brilliant in this

WarriorN · 21/09/2021 07:05

I've decided she's just generally brilliant also after her Benjamin Boyce interview.

Am ordering the book today.

I also keep reflecting on how her maths abilities help so much to understand this so clearly.

I remember an article in the guardian around conspiracy theorists, flat Earthers and anti vax, and they are often, (with some exceptions) poorer at maths. So they don't understand perspectives and of course elements of science.

Not worth its own thread, but here she is with Coleman Hughes, as part of her US promotion tour:

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 21/09/2021 11:29

I liked the Coleman Hughes discussion. It will be interesting to see how many such conversations Helen Joyce will have on this promotion tour.

I don't know anything about US podcasts and their audiences (I have, of course, heard of Joe Rogan) - will these chats and interviews have a decent reach?

Also interesting to note that no publisher would publish in the US. All books have been U.K. published and have had to be shipped out. Though I imagine zoom cuts costs of travel and helps with publicising and interviews!

Episode 39 Nonbinary Identities

With the invention of the term ‘nonbinary’ we’ve seen an unprecedented number young people claiming to feel like neither a man or a woman. Today we explore Ian Hacking’s concept of “making people up” and the creation of new classifications and “types” of people.

Several questions also arise: does a non-binary identification require medicalisation? What personality traits may correlate with this identity and is it different in males and females? For parents, how might one respond when a timid child quietly says “No” to the “gender binary?” And what role does non-binary label play as individuals step in and step out of trans identification?

She's brilliant. I go on Youtube searching her name. Every interview she does is excellent, this one was particularly fine.

Saisong · 23/09/2021 23:23

She is excellent, and so clear.

I took great delight in Waterstones the other day in finding her book tucked away on the lowest shelf and displaying it cover on in front of Shon Fayes latest missive. Little wins.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 23/09/2021 23:53

I really enjoyed her book - so clear and to the point. I do hope all the numpty politicians who've been sent a copy, pick it up and have a read.
