LBC Coverage this week

LBC have been covering gender issues quite a lot this week, and not to small audiences either. Suzanne Moore was just on, Debbie Hayton on Maajid Nawaz (Maajid knows exactly what is going on and is very supportive towards women and children in this matter) - feels like the tide is about to turn.

@KittenKong

Won’t have the language? I’m sure someone, somewhere will spot the difference...
Sexual harassment existed long before the phrase but it was not feasible to name it and bring actions about it until the language existed.

Helen Joyce on Stella O'Malley's podcast about the importance of language and reality.

I mentioned more than language and extended into the implications for the public understanding of science etc.

Right. I’ve had it now. Was looking for a book club to join. Oh, a ladies feminist club was advertised... little photos of the members... use your imagination... I’m well annoyed now.

@KittenKongyes this is what I mean by tide about to turn, I think the coverage is getting wider and people won't be able to pretend they don't know what is happening.

I certainly don't think that anyone should "delude themselves that it's all going to be ok." @adultchildofalcoholicparents, and I certainly am not deluding myself in thinking that given I have three children on the spectrum who are all deeply affected by this issue on a daily basis and have already been really hurt by this and that I have to continue to do repair work.

@highame I think this is a dilemna that is out there, in another article recently I saw "Single issue feminist" coming up as a statement - as though the trans issue doesn't impact so many aspects of feminism - TRA's and others can shout they are intersectional as much as they want but they aren't seeing this issue in an interesectional way at all. The opposite in fact.

Still, I think as quickly as young women have embraced this, they will embrace the next thing. I work in a uni and I've already started to see some changes, the young women are questioning more and they are unhappy about seeing children being affected.

I was floored by the Tavistock decision - it felt like the darkest moment recently and shocking. But when I see several articles and several radio spots across the UK in a week - all of which are eloquently and clearly seeing the questioning side, I do feel that the tide is about to turn, on public awareness if not on policy change.

I also think the tide is beginning to slowly turn. My sister used to take the mickey out of me... then I explained the whole ‘lesbians and the lady penis’ thing to her. Then she ended up working in a place that was wokey blokey central (I warned her that this is real - not a drill). She is right onboard now.

I think legal challenges are the way forward. There's enough of us to contribute to various cases, and indeed party conference season aside, it will be reporting on legal cases that sways public opinion.
Most people don't believe things are that bad. Most people don't know women in prison are being attacked in prison by male sex offenders. Most people don't know that Stonewall wants to get rid of sex as a protected characteristic, or what that would actually mean if it were to become law.
Most people don't understand that we are facing the reality of "woman" being legally understood to be a feeling and not what half the adult population actually is.
But every time someone sues for being attacked in a women's prison by a male inmate, more people will realise it is actually happening.

And every time someone sues a government department for making up the law, people will realise the ramifications of inventing policy based on feelings instead of facts.

The most useful thing we could do now is to come up with a funding platform for future cases that can't be brought down by twitter activists.

When you say little photos of the members...

I think things are going to get worse before they get better but more people seem to be becoming aware of the issue as a result, which in itself is a positive.

Two years ago we had Glinner as the lone well known voice on the GC side, and were resigned to self-ID being imposed. Let's not lose sight of how far we've come.

@FlyingOink I think this idea deserves its own thread. Do you mind if I make one?
