Just saw this on twitter:

Marsha de Cordova MP
@MarshadeCordova
·

1/2 It has been an immense privilege to serve as the Shadow Women and Equalities Secretary for the past 17 months.

It therefore comes with much sadness that I am resigning with immediate effect.

2/2 Having only been elected in 2017 for the historically marginal constituency of Battersea, I would like to focus more of my time and efforts on the people of Battersea.

I will continue to support Keir Starmer from the backbenches.

Wonder if she was pressurised to resign after declining to go to the Stonewall LGBT event at the Labour conference....

@Violetparis

The last line of an article in The Guardian about this is interesting;

'One senior MP said the role would be difficult to fill, citing tensions at a senior level over the party’s stance on transgender rights.'

Yes, I clocked that as well, tucked away right at the end of the Guardian article.

Interesting.

I've heard rumours that her departure might actually be because she's not really committed to abortion rights? Apparently she once voted for abortion rights in NI in 2018 but ever since then has been silent & abstained and dodged the issue on everything about women's right to choose. She's a "committed Christian" (leads prayer meetings with other committed Christians in Parliament etc) and the suggestion is that since that first vote, she's had pressure and/or "conscience" issues. Don't know if it's true but it sounds believable ,and if it was true they obviously wouldn't be saying anything about it

Well it's a bloody Shame because the two that resigned were actually sensible on women's rights. Obviously Starmer wants people who drink and serve the Kool Aid only. I simply can't vote labour.

I do think it's the nail in the coffin of Starmer's on the fence

Starmer isn't on the fence, he made a statement pro self id in June.

Anyone in Battersea constituency should email Cordova with their views on self-id and women's rights. Let her know you support her if she is pro women's rights.

I look forward to hearing who will be taking on the new role.

Dreaming of Rosie Duffield.

Worst case scenario: useful idiot like Nandy, bleating on about her one trans constituent while she merrily gives away the rights of 51% of the population.

I look forward to hearing who will be taking on the new role.
