Labour Women's Declaration and Lesbian Labour are holding a talk in Brighton during the Labour conference, who's coming?

I'll be there!

I'm looking foward to hearing from Emma Hilton, I've only ever come across her on Twitter where she's brilliant, it'll be good to see what she actually sounds like in real life!

There are some videos of Emma H on YouTube. Was it WPUK who organised the discussion about sports in QE Hall?

JD2018May · 11/09/2021 16:13

Me, I'm going, actually involved with LWD, and hoping we get a good audience. I think that keeping women's sports sex-segregated is something that motivates a lot of people, from the simple perspective of obvious fairness, so it should be interesting to see how many show up. Non-members and non-Labour people also welcome, because this is a conversation that we really need to have. Any Brighton or South coast mumsnetters able to come? 28 Sept, 5.45pm, venue will be emailed later, but it's central.

JD2018May · 11/09/2021 16:15

Yes, WPUK. She's bloomin brilliant.

I totally agree. Personally I have no interest in sports, they just don't interest me!

But, I am interested in women's rights to single sex sports and will fight for that right. I'm interested in my daughter's right to a level playing field (literally and figuratively). She plays rugby, at the moment with the boys as they're young. But when they're older they're split by sex for very obvious safety reasons on the pitch. It makes a nonsense that if boys are allowed to identify onto the team.

Also I'm interested in single sex spaces more generally.

I don't understand how the left has got itself in such a pickle over gender ideology, how so many seem to have thrown common sense out of the window. It really gives me hope that there are women in Labour (and other parties too) who are hanging on in there and fighting for women's rights.

Yes, WPUK. She's bloomin brilliant.
Emma H also gave a superb presentation for WHRC (also on YouTube).

I'm looking forward to being in a room with other feminists, it's been so long!

The last talk I went to was WPUK 2020 just before lockdown. Wasn't that brilliant! It feels like an age away, now, though.

Likewise. If all goes to plan, I'm attending the Oxford event 24 September - speakers, Jane Clare Jones, Helen Joyce, Maya Forstater, and Julie Bindel.

Ooh that looks good too!

FlyingOink · 12/09/2021 17:11

Bought a ticket, looking forward to it

Stayingnomorethanayearpal · 12/09/2021 17:19

I left the Labour Party last year after many years . Would I be allowed to come ? ( Still hoping they realise how crap they are to us women and change their ways 😭)

It's billed as a public meeting. And, I saw it advertised as "open to people of all parties and none" so yes, I think you're definitely allowed to come!

I'd wager there will be loads of ex-labour members there who wish they had a party they could vote for!

JD2018May · 12/09/2021 19:52

Yes, absolutely. A mixed audience would be very welcome.

FlyingOink · 28/09/2021 16:42

Evening I'm not going to make it now but I hope it goes well. Does anyone know of it will be recorded?

FlyingOink · 28/09/2021 16:47

If not of

lanadelgrey · 28/09/2021 22:34

It was an amazing evening, security worked brilliantly and there was a v special guest

Fitt · 29/09/2021 00:19

I read this from a journalist in attendance

UPDATE: went along to Antoniazzi’s event tonight where two dozen trans rights activists were indeed protesting outside the venue. Inside the Gower MP told attendees: ‘I would not be here speaking to you tonight if I didn’t have 20 or more Labour MPs supporting me.’ Looks like it might not just be Duffield after all.

Violetparis · 29/09/2021 07:37

I wonder who those 20 MPs are, they need to start speaking out as this issue is not going away.

Cwenthryth · 29/09/2021 08:17

20 or more, out of 199….. so maybe just above 10%? That she knows of, who have been brave enough to make their views known at least off the record to a fellow MP.

I was following this on Twitter last night (look up #LWDBrighton) looks like it was a great evening, how was attendance?

Floisme · 29/09/2021 08:26

I'm afraid I would not be so gracious about the 20 MPs claiming to support me if 19 of them were only doing so in secret. I'm a big cowardy coward myself so maybe that's hypocritical but hey, that's me - I expect an MP to have a bit more of a spine than I have.

Lordamighty · 29/09/2021 08:41

I heard that the special guest was Rosie Duffield, can anyone confirm?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 29/09/2021 09:35

Yes!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 29/09/2021 09:35

I wasn't there but have seen pictures of her there.

Rubidium · 29/09/2021 10:18

Report about the meeting from this morning's Times:

Tonia Antoniazzi, the Labour MP for Gower was there as well. It's shocking that a group of women meeting to discuss their rights needs 'a heavy security presence' at a Labour Party conference of all places.

lanadelgrey · 29/09/2021 10:42

Both Rosie Duffield and Tonia Antoniazzi talked about the issue of being reliant on union support to finance election campaigns which makes it hard for MPs to speak out. But as the also pointed out Unison has heavily female membership and GMB has a woman leader. Seems that women members speaking up is a clear route forward. Though I did say, a bit gushingly after Wine Wine that women would crowdfund for their election campaigns
