Canadian MNers - election hopes?

I've been reading about things looking a bit dicey for Trudeau, and O'Toole possibly knowing what a woman is, but I've no idea if I'm reading reliable sources.

How's it looking on the ground? And do women's rights have any cut through at this point?

I haven't seen it be addressed very much, TBH. I do think O'Tool has a good chance and Trudeau must be regretting calling the election - I think he believed it was a sure thing and he'd get a majority.

Basically the Liberals, NDP, and Greens are all completely captured by identity politics. The Conservatives are the only option that isn't, but they aren't what I'd call inspiring either - O'Tool is kind of a tool and they've been wedded to neoliberal thinking for a while.

That being said, he's made platform promises about strengthening unions and worker rights, which made me prick up my ears.

Looked into it a bit - there isn't a lot. There seems to be a little bit of a struggle in some ways within the party. O'Tool is seen as being more positive to LGBTQ+ stuff, and my impression is that like a lot of Canadians, he doesn't really know much about what is going on with gender ideology and takes it at face value.

The indefatigable Canadian man who goes out with a billboard and films himself talking to people about puberty blockers - Chris Elston? - seems to get a bit of attention on Twitter, but no idea whether that means anything in real life. I know nothing about his background or motivation, but applaud his efforts to get more information out there and to try to get people to look past the simplistic headlines on this and engage with the reality of doing this to children.

Canada seems to have badly messed up in this area. I'm surprised there's not been more public pushback.

Canada seems to have badly messed up in this area. I'm surprised there's not been more public pushback.

Canadians tend to naturally, even among conservatives, have a very live and let live approach. So unless they can see poor outcomes, they tend to keep their thoughts to themselves and rub along.

There is also a lot of trust in public officials and even politicians. Overall people trust that they have good motives and are trying to write good legislation. There is also a very high level of trust in the medical system.

Just as an example, in my province, the legislature has not been sitting since the covid statement of emergency, and there has been no pushback on this from people or in the media. A very large proportion of people are willing to accept almost any health restrictions without question. Even those with doubts tend to be be relatively quiet in expressing them, they are not protesting or anything like that. Even they are a bit embarrassed by the odd crackpot who does make a protest.

And the mainstream media has not allowed any information that would contradict the narrative on gender to be published. No one who isn't seeing it directly knows about the problems with the prisons, in universities, people like Jessica Yaniv, what is being taught in schools. If they see a bit of it the assumption is that it is an exception.

I've seen murmurs on some social media platforms that it'll be great to get rid of Trudeau. Not sure how widespread that opinion is tho.

In my parts Trudeau is widely disliked even by people who voted for him (nothing to do with idpol, but corruption). Tories and Liberals are running neck and neck. What tends to happen is NDP voters get spooked about Conservative victories and strategically vote Liberal at the last moment. It's impossible to predict what will happenelection polls here are consistently wrong but O'Toole has a real shot.

LobsterNapkin · 03/09/2021 15:27

What happens with the Bloc will also be significant. If the Liberals lose a lot of seats to them in Quebec, they are finished. Which is why he's been trying to cozy up with being fairly quiet about this secularism mandate, business, and unilaterally saying they can modify the constitution. I'm not sure they are really buying it though.

LobsterNapkin · 03/09/2021 15:28

Not sure how I ended up saying mandate and business. Should just be mandate.
