Interesting.

The important bit would be who chooses the people in the aaembly.

Joanna Cherry is absolutely right but watch the SNP & GP wriggle out of it.

littlbrowndog · 28/08/2021 08:39

They could never stand the transparency

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 28/08/2021 08:56

The SNP will do what they always do. Consult with groups they fund in order to decide how they should think
Dissent has never been allowed in the SNP

I have commented on the thread, but there was finger wagging about my language from the tra censors and it’s now awaiting moderation.
The UK used to be a bastion of free speech - it’s enraging to see us reduced to the level of a Soviet republic in this regard.

Babdoc · 28/08/2021 09:18

The Times thread, I should make clear, not this one!

BuffysBigSister · 28/08/2021 09:20

When I discussed this with my SNP MSP before the last election he also mentioned a peoples assembly so there may be some support within the party. However, with the way things are currently, I am not optimistic it would get off the ground. They are too feart of being called "transphobes" (not JC, obviously, but most of the rest of them)

Tibtom · 28/08/2021 09:29

Why? The SNP and Greens don't need to. They can just vote it through like the elected dictatorship they are.

I think on this article every comment is going through moderation. I have commented a few times, with no problematic language etc. and they are all awaiting moderation. They usually get through eventually.

The times have implemented a heavy handed moderation strategy on any articles dealing with this topic, much like MN.

Babdoc · 28/08/2021 10:57

Which is pretty much my point, Mullets! In my youth, we celebrated the end of the government’s role in censoring live theatre, we didn’t have self appointed “moderators” of our right to express our opinions, and we would have stated our belief that Britain supported free speech, without any doubt in the truth of that statement.

But now look at us.

I didn't post on that thread but I had a completely innocuous comment on the "Salmond is a pig" thread removed without an explanation.

There is no chance of the SNP/ Green unholy alliance paying the slightest attention to anything Cherry has to say.

I posted a perfectly polite and reasonable comment on a critical race theory that mostly quoted the original article text with a comment about the white working class that didn't make it at all.

Artichokeleaves · 28/08/2021 11:49

This is what needs to happen. A randomly picked representation from the average Joe Bloggs in the street. However I think its very well known that it would produce a lot of very, very unhelpful evidence that would reinforce the libleft view that really voters shouldn't be allowed because they won't do and think what their betters tell them to. See Mandelson's 'post democratic era' hope where professional politicians could indulge their personal hobby horses without any barriers from real people and real life intruding.

If this was ever allowed to happen, it would be like Question Time where it would be wholly stuffed with people who Thought Right and would ensure the only evidence produced fitted the planned end result.

Sad

Completely agree, Babdoc. That's you and me, coming from - I think? - very, very different political viewpoints who both feel that this is an issue. So if people across the political spectrum feel silenced, and that their civil liberties are being curtailed and limited - what does that suggest about this orthodoxy?

They can just vote it through like the elected dictatorship they are.

This seems to be how the Scotgov operate, yep. It's actually quite amazing how far we have gone down the authoritarian route, yet a large majority of people see no problem at all with the administration. Chastening, even.
