This should be an interesting listen, although perhaps the response to it will actually be the most interesting:

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000s1rr

My Name Is...Anna is branded a terf – a byword for transphobia. She rejects the label and goes in search of solutions to some of the thorny issues around trans inclusion.

The rest of the synopsis:

Terf stands for trans-exclusionary radical feminist and was originally coined to describe feminists who oppose trans women accessing single-sex spaces like female toilets and changing rooms, sports and events. It carries an implication of hatred of trans people – a view that Anna firmly denies.

She wants to understand the term – where did it come from, what effect is it having on feminist politics, and what is at the heart of the debates in which the word is used?

She speaks to trans people and fellow radical feminists as she interrogates her own views and looks for solutions to some of the thorny issues around trans inclusion that have torn feminism apart for decades.

Thanks for the heads up. Will listen.

Perhaps I'm just cynical but part of me wonders if this will be genuine? I'm just wondering if this is related to the threads that pop up here every so often asking for people with experience of being GC and then changing their mind to believe that gender ID is more important than sex?

I've always wondered if those threads have an ulterior motive, as in my experience, almost everyone I know who is now branded a terf started out blindly agreeing with trans rhetoric until something pushed them too far or they actually genuinely "educated themselves". Any rare examples of heading the other direction involve compete misunderstanding of what being critical of gender (the patriarchy's tool of oppression) actually means.

Historically, believers in trans rights ideology (not necessarily trans people themselves) are reluctant to appear in the media without complete control of the narrative.

Let's hope I am proved wrong!

StillWeRise · 25/08/2021 18:57

I don't recall ever reading a thread like that
I'd be quite interested actually to see how that change would happen because as you say most of us started out thinking yeah, OK, poor trans people live and let live, until we thought about it a bit more

I can't bear to listen in case she ends up "educating herself" to "be kind"...

First broadcast Mon 8 Feb 2021.

You can listen online now. Just clink the link.

Ha! Shows how good my memory is. From what I do now recall I don't need to listen to it again although it might be interesting to those who didn't hear it first time round. As posters here guessed though, you will be in for some disappointment.

There has been a couple of threads asking for these experiences think. But I don't recall any replies being able to provide evidence of them.
StillWeRise · 25/08/2021 19:30

QED then

flyingbuttress43 · 25/08/2021 20:42

I just listened to it for the first time. My conclusion - how very BBC.

StillWeRise · 25/08/2021 21:15

disappointingly hard of thinking philosophy lecturer

Shedbuilder · 25/08/2021 21:28

More BBC/ Radio 4 transpropaganda, including plain lies — like presenting the trans protesters at MichFest as benign and justified in what they did. No mention of women's rights and the erosion of them, flat-out denial that any man might dress up as a woman in order to take advantage of them. I've got less than a week to decide whether to renew my TV licence or not and I feel increasingly like not doing so.

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 25/08/2021 21:31

Awful. More trans voices than women's voices. A lot of educating the TERF and ignoring how women are impacted FFS

BoreOfWhabylon · 25/08/2021 21:32

This is the philosophy lecturer

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 25/08/2021 21:32

They have never come across a transwoman who is a risk to women, they should look at prisons

Disneycharacter · 25/08/2021 21:33

That makes me a terf then!

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 25/08/2021 21:33

That person reckons they sometimes pass until they speak
Hmm

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 25/08/2021 21:34

More frilly skirts

oldwomanwhoruns · 25/08/2021 22:01

Just caught the end of this program. Wooly gender woo theories put forward as fact, and unchallenged. Someone calling themselves a 'cis woman'. All agreeing that changing the language to 'birthing people' is just hunky dory. Angry

StillWeRise · 25/08/2021 22:55

@WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld

That person reckons they sometimes pass until they speak Hmm
quite ...and the old 'why aren't you bothered about male cleaners
nauticant · 25/08/2021 23:00

It seems it was as disappointing as I (when prompted) recalled.

There might be better listening coming up next:

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000z0cs

Helen Lewis introduces some iconic figures from history and looks at the influence of their less well-known life partners.

but note that if you don't turn off the radio sharpish on it finishing you'll next be listening to this:

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000z0cx

Gray Crosbie, Lawrence Chaney, Katy Montgomerie and Victor Lockhart discuss the importance of pronouns to gender identity.

MonsignorMirth · 25/08/2021 23:17

Haven't listened to it, but iirc it was by this lady talking about her dissertation
twitter.com/annalouiseadams/status/1270831829097070596

NB clicking on a google doc, as linked in that tweet, might show up your real name if you have a google account. Might not be a problem but worth being aware.
