Viking Women - online lecture

Thought some of the FWR visitors might be interested in this:

'This lecture will discuss gender roles in the Viking Age, with particular attention to how women and men have been perceived in previous research. Despite much attention, normative and essentialist views of women and men continues to colour interpretations of the primary evidence, be it archaeological or written. Research produced over a long period of time is examined in order to highlight and discuss preconceptions that have influenced the research results. The main focus of the analysis is placed on ‘housewives’ and their assigned roles at the farms, as well women with other roles - in modern research often labelled ‘norm breakers’ - such as ritual specialists, warriors, travellers and settlers. The presentation will end by proposing new approaches to the study of the roles of women and men, stressing that all lives are worthy of examination, regardless of their roles and status, and ability to influence society.'

♥️

Brilliant, thanks! makes such a refreshing change from the usual Viking Studies guff, that because shieldmaidens were such badass warriors, they couldn’t possibly be women, and instead constituted their own distinct gender identity.

The woman giving the lecture has a long and impressive academic history, so presumably is coming at the subject from an informed viewpoint, Humbygge.

I often wish I could actually afford some of the academic titles:

Of course, I was chuffed when she as a Viking academic started following me on Twitter. I was referring to papers like this which posit viking culture within contemporary notions of gender identity and the "queering" of sex roles, that may have little relevance historically.

Would be nice to see some writing on the slaves and slave trading of the Vikings.

Google the name Melkorka - fascinating woman. Also Aud the Deep Minded. She led one expedition to settle Iceland. About 15 % of the males were slaves, captured in Scotland and Ireland. A larger number of the women were also slaves according to DNA . But only the men- or some of them - were recorded in the sagas. Being deep minded she decided everyone should have a plot of land - other colonies had collapsed through infighting.
