Shadow equalities secretary not attending LGBT conference

This is interesting.

The shadow equalities minister has declined to attend the party’s annual LGBT conference event co-hosted with Stonewall despite pressure from Sir Keir Starmer, the party’s leader.

LGBT Labour and the Stonewall charity have been running joint events at the party’s conference for at least a decade. No shadow equalities secretary has previously declined the invitation to attend.

Marsha de Cordova, the shadow equalities secretary, told the group in an email last month that she was unable to attend owing to “diary clashes”.

Her team did notrespond to the invitation for three weeks and only did so after being sent a follow-up email. The group offered to move the event to a time that suited her but did not receive a response. Starmer’s office has since asked her to make attending the event a priority. The Times understands that de Cordova does not believe that Starmer’s office has told her to attend.

Does equalities secretary also attend all disability conferences, refugee support and homeless support events?

And women's events? A Woman's Place, etc?

Good for Marsha. May her backbone remain functional.

I wonder how long before she's thrown under the bus. KS won't like her not complying.

Good on her for not attending, but I wish she had been honest, instead of 'diary clashes'.

I think the bit where they offered to move the event to a date she could make, and it wasn't taken up, spoke volumes.

I wonder how long it will be before she decides she’s changed her mind and will go. This will be very interesting to watch this play out.

Do we think Marsha’s response was “no thank you”? 😉

Interesting, I wonder where she stands on all this. Let's hope she's a critical thinker. It's very revealing I think that they were clearly outraged at her not immediately replying to an email. That she didn't immediately cancel everything. Shows how important the performative element of this is, how you must be seen to not just go along with it but to prioritise it above all else and compete to see who can be the most enthusiastic.

I hate to disappoint you but she is my local MP and has made plenty of TWAW statements in the past - she was very keen on self-ID, for example. (She is also very bad at getting back to constituents so it's no surprise that she didn't reply to an invitation.) I genuinely believe that this was a diary clash.

Ah - she won't be getting her Pink Award for attendance then?
