Any medical people out there?

Hello, regular lurker and occasional poster, I’ve name changed.
There have been a few recent articles in the BJGP in the last 2 months around healthcare for trans people that I felt were misleading and I would like to write a response.

I believe good healthcare for people who are trans is important, we need to reduce stigma and discrimination and ensuring trans people get accurate (sex based) screening. These articles however conflated sex and gender and brought DSDs where they weren’t relevant, totally obscuring what was actually being talked about. I think a lot of medical people are worried about trans ideology and medicalisation of distress especially in children and young people but feel they won’t or can’t speak out. Most people in my professional network just don’t want to talk about it as they perceive it as too toxic.

Anyway I thought I’d ask on here if anyone wants to co-author a sensitive and professional response from a feminist viewpoint. (You would need to be a health professional or academic with an interest in health but not necessarily doctor or GP) PM me if interested. I can write something myself of course but with more authors more likely to get taken seriously and published.

I do not fit your bill but sounds great and hope you find someone!

Sorry - I wish I were brave enough, but i can't because of family repercussions (close relative is trans). Are you on Twitter? There are a few openly GC medics who might be interested.

If you're joining Twitter, do be careful. Use a VPN and don't post any info that could be pieced together to identify you. But it is a fabulous source of GC voice - much to the annoyance of TRAs 😉

A while ago someone on here posted an excellent BMJ (I think) short piece on the importance of both sex and gender for medics - being sensitive to trans patients' social and emotional needs while also being aware of their physical realities. I can't find the thread but perhaps some other wise mumsnetter could? That's certainly something you will want to cite. Good luck OP

Thanks I’ll look up the BMJ article. I do have a Twitter account but rarely post. I’ll take a look at the gender critical stuff.

Is this the BMJ article www.bmj.com/content/372/bmj.n735? I'm sure there was a MN on it too.

Bumping in the hope that more medics will see it. Good luck, OP!

PS I'm not following the Helen Webberley hearing closely but I did see the other day that a paediatric endocrinologist was giving evidence. I think he was Dutch. He was stating very firmly and repeatedly that GPs should not be prescribing hormones for children, as this is a highly specialist area, requiring a multi-disciplinary team to look at all aspects of the child's case. Might be of use to you?

(There's a thread here with details.)

Margaret McCartney, who wrote the BMJ article linked to by Maud, is very good and also has a high public profile.

I don't work in healthcare but a number of doctors came into my work (bar) recently. I talked to a number of them in depth about trans healthcare and they said that apparently there is a large movement behind the scenes who are preparing a statement about the many issues with the current narrative. I found that to be really encouraging!!!! All of them knew their stuff and were suitably concerned. We discussed ROGD, inability to consent to treatment, experimental treatment etc etc. Sorry I know that's not particularly helpful, I just wanted to say you are not alone!!!! And that hopefully there's many people like you moving behind the scenes.

OldCrone · 20/08/2021 09:53

I'm not a healthcare professional, so this doesn't apply to me, but I would be very wary about sending a PM to a poster with no apparent posting history with a view to disclosing my identity.

I hope you are genuine OP, but perhaps it would be better to contact an organisation like SEGM for this.

Jane Symons is the Vice-Chair of the Medical Journalists' Association. I noticed that yesterday she tweeted in support of Joan Smith (regarding her dismissal as co-chair of London's VAWG board). She might be somebody to contact.
