Woah, check out the reviews! Star

Timely, necessary and important J.K. Rowling
Enlightening, infuriating and hopeful. Julie Bindel hits all the relevant points when it comes to feminism and what it means Martina Navratilova
Julie Bindel - one of the bravest, smartest journalists and campaigners out there - draws on a fearless lifetime on the front line of feminism and offers a refreshing, sometimes provocative, wake-up call for women of all ages Samira Ahmed
A sharply argued, deftly written examination of where feminism is at in 2021 - and where feminists should go next Selina Todd
Whoever gave away feminism, look out, because Julie Bindel wants it back Cordelia Fine
Bindel's campaigning to end male violence is the rallying call men need to join the fight David Challen
Feminism for Women needs to come with a very large trigger warning: 'this book may change your mind'. Written for young feminists, it should be read by everyone. Bindel has rescued the story of radical feminism from airless conference halls and impenetrable Gender Studies courses specialising in erasing feminists and our histories Gita Sahgal
I disagree with Bindel on some issues but God, she's my kind of feminist . . . She is fearless. I love her Ian Martin

This growing body of literature fills me with confidence, there are some great resources on the net but nothing beats a good book and there some very good books being produced.

ArabellaScott · 24/07/2021 12:21

Yes. It makes a huge difference to refer to 'that person on Twitter' or to refer to 'Helen Joyce's book' etc.

I've just listened to an utterly brilliant interview with Julie Bindel on the Crime Analyst Forgotten Victims podcast.

So clear, so angry, so passionate. Amazing.

My 13 year daughter and I saw Julie in the Jack the Ripper documentary, not sure if this is the same thing she was brill. Another woman was saying the police totally screwed up because they made the assumption the victims were prostitutes. The sexism was awful.
Just ore ordered Julie's book!

I'm beginning to think that I've got a different definition of 'being silenced', as mine doesn't involve getting a newspaper article, TV interview, radio interview or special shoutout for a book every single day of the week.

Yawn!

As opposed to the pro-trans anti-women stance taken almost everywhere!

What do you aim to achieve posting here?

Barheim · 25/07/2021 00:36

Yeah if you're seeing a lot of that it's because of your tunnel vision because other than explicitely trans positive media and companies that (claim to be/are) anti-disciminatory there isn't a lot of it.

What do you aim to achieve posting here?

Chipping away at ye ol' echo chamber.

Megasausagehead · 25/07/2021 00:42

So men aren't competing in women's sports? Men being genetically XY.

And intact transwomen aren't in women's prisons?

Wow

It is not anti-trans to be pro-women (by SEX)

Stop calling people 'intact' like we're animals, thanks.
Megasausagehead · 25/07/2021 00:50

Has a penis, like men do. Better?

Jorriss · 25/07/2021 00:59

Humans are animals. Obviously. What's the problem here?

Barheim · 25/07/2021 01:02

If dehumanization is the hill you want to die on, by all means.

Oh c'mon. If I'm a cervix haver, uterus owner and menstruator then surely intact penis owner is fine, no?
Whatsnewpussyhat · 25/07/2021 01:12

Yet it appears acceptable to dehumanise women by calling us vulva owners or cervix havers etc but we can't call male people penis owners or prostate havers in case it upsets them? Such contradicting double standards no?

Barheim · 25/07/2021 01:13

Do you frequently call your vet to ask for your cervix haver cat to be fixed?

For that matter, 'people with a cervix' is language used to not alienate and possibly endanger trans men and non-binary people with a cervix, so I'm not sure* why you always use it to attack trans women.

*the answer is plainly obvious

Why is it deemed acceptable to remove the words woman/woman from anything relating to female biology because a tiny minority are uncomfortable with their sex, but not the words man/men from anything relating to male biology?

By your logic 'people with a prostate' should be used in all mens healthcare and cancer screening so it doesn't alienate and endanger transwomen, because you can't tell us we must refer to ourselves by our body parts then claim that rule doesn't apply to you too.

Aparallaxia · 25/07/2021 02:09

The Bindel article was good, but it presents the usual problem with GC thinking on multi-author sites (Quillette, etc.): almost everything else there seems to have been written by right-wing ideologues and libertarians ('Voter ID laws are not racist' written by a young college-educated white man). The comments are all by grumpy white men with fixed ideas who want everyone to put down what they're doing and listen RIGHT NOW because they know what's what and no-one else does!

What company we are forced to keep.

There is also a piece by someone apologizing for having voted Tory in the last elections. They voted Tory because Brexit. And this is what happens when you vote on a one-party issue: you get a side of shit with your chicken dinner. It has happened to much of the white working-class in the US: they vote Republican because guns, abortion, and gay marriage, and in return they get gutted unions, captured regulatory agencies leading to lower environmental standards, roll-back of controls on financial institutions threatening another 2008, a pathetically low minimum wage, no parental leave, no sick leave, in fact no protection from predatory capitalism and billionaires paying no federal income taxes [i.e. national insurance].

I am afraid something like this may happen to us and our support for women's rights. How much shit will we have to eat to get our stuff done?

Yes, that's the one. Highly highly recommended.

I remember a rather weird thread about Laura Richard a while back, so I was a bit hesitant to start the series but so far she's been amazing on how violence affects women's choices and not men's, socialisation etc.
